- Energy and Environmental Solutions
- Advanced Materials and Processes for polymers, composites, and civil engineering.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
According to ADEME, industrial waste heat emissions account for an estimated 51 TWh, representing 16% of fuel consumption in the sector, released as waste heat in France. The distribution analysis of this lost energy indicates that 10% is found in high-temperature emissions (>400°C), 37% in medium temperatures (200°C to 400°C), and 53% in low temperatures (100°C to 200°C). While numerous studies have focused on high-temperature recovery technologies, medium and low-temperature emissions are often dispersed across the national landscape, particularly in the Hauts-de-France region, complicating the development of innovative recovery technologies.
OBJECTIVES:
This project aims to devise flexible latent thermal storage solutions for the recovery of waste heat, enhancing energy efficiency across various industrial systems. Specifically, the project seeks to minimize or replace fossil fuel usage in applications such as heating and hot water production in residential settings (including domestic hot water, individual and collective housing, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.) and/or in the industrial sector, including the agri-food industry (greenhouse cultivation), district heating networks, and endothermic energy processes. The goal is to capture and store waste energy in optimized latent thermal storage units, providing flexibility based on application needs, ultimately contributing to the advancement of a high-performing, sustainable, and efficient future industry.
Given their high volumetric energy density, one approach to recovering thermal emissions involves developing latent thermal storage modules utilizing phase change materials (PCMs), focusing on eco-efficient materials. The project's innovation lies in employing passive techniques to enhance heat transfer within the PCM and the heat transfer fluid, ensuring compact and optimized modules that facilitate efficient thermal energy charging and discharging across various applications.
ACTIVITIES:
The complexity of the phenomena involved in the development of storage units necessitates the creation of numerical prediction models (detailed CFD) for melting-solidification processes, including both natural and mixed convective heat exchanges. These models will undergo rigorous validation through experimental test benches at both local and global scales. A dual approach combining numerical simulations and experimental validations will be employed throughout the project. The developed storage modules will involve various coupled physical phenomena (single-phase conduction and convection, conduction and convection with phase change), requiring detailed modeling of these heat transfer modes using CFD-type numerical tools to accurately depict local transfer mechanisms.
Thermo-fluidic experiments (local and global) will be conducted to validate the numerical models and assess the performance of selected phase change materials (PCM), employing advanced quantitative techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyze velocity fields in both natural convection within the PCM and forced convection in the heat transfer fluid, thereby qualifying the developed numerical models.
The integration of numerical tools with experimental approaches will facilitate the prototyping and development of flexible and durable waste heat recovery modules operating within the temperature range of 70°C to 180°C.
CANDIDATE PROFILE:
The position is suitable for candidates holding or pursuing a Master's degree / engineering diploma with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Fluid Mechanics / Energy Systems / Thermal Engineering.
The essential skills required for the successful execution of the proposed research project include:
- Numerical modeling and thermo-fluidic simulation
- Thermo-fluidic experimentation through local and global approaches
- Scientific rigor and strong writing skills
- Proficiency in English for the dissemination of research findings (publications, scientific communications)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The position offers a flexible work environment with opportunities for partial remote work, an exceptional workplace atmosphere, generous leave policies, on-site dining options, and support for public transport costs (75%). Additional benefits include a sustainable mobility package (for carpooling or cycling), family allowances based on family composition, and a wide range of social benefits (relocation assistance, financial aid, vacation vouchers, etc.). The institution fosters a stimulating innovation ecosystem involving startups, students, researchers, and businesses.
