Researcher - CAD Modeling and Design

Technopole de Sophia Antipolis, France INRIA Temps plein

Context and Advantages of the Position

The CAD industry is a multi-billion dollar market that relies heavily on parametric modeling to design and optimize manufactured goods. However, the complexity of CAD software interfaces hinders the creation of parametric models, making it difficult for professionals to master design principles and software capabilities. To promote effective modeling strategies and creative flow, design educators advocate for freehand drawing as a preliminary step to parametric modeling. Our research seeks to convert freehand drawings into reusable CAD models to inform this research.

Mission and Objectives

To address this challenge, we aim to create a benchmark of design drawings and corresponding CAD models. We will collect professional drawings and their corresponding CAD models to understand how designers create such drawings and how these drawings relate to the intended CAD model. This research will focus on concept sketches that designers draw to explain a shape they have in mind.

Main Activities

We will select a set of high-quality CAD models from public datasets and gather models with a wide range of complexity, as measured by the number and diversity of CAD operations used. We will then hire professional designers to draw these CAD shapes and align the two types of data, putting drawing strokes in correspondence with CAD instructions that generate the same shape parts. This aligned data will allow us to study how different CAD operations are drawn and serve as a benchmark for algorithms that aim to segment and interpret design drawings.

Requirements and Benefits

The ideal candidate will have experience in implementing 3D user interfaces and/or geometry processing algorithms. Benefits include subsidized meals, partial reimbursement of public transport costs, annual leave, RTT, teleworking, flexible organization of working hours, professional equipment, social and cultural events, access to vocational training, and contribution to mutual insurance.

Remuneration

Gross Salary: 2788 € per month.
