Syntetica is an innovative chemistry startup dedicated to transforming the textile industry by pioneering textile-to-textile recycling, with a focus on nylon.

The production of synthetic materials, primarily derived from crude oil, contributes significantly to carbon emissions. Alarmingly, less than 1% of these materials are recycled into new textiles once they become waste. At Syntetica, we are committed to eliminating crude oil dependency in synthetic materials. Our vision is to create a sustainable ecosystem where waste is efficiently recycled into the new garments and textiles we utilize in our daily lives, including automotive and home applications. Our goal is to achieve circularity in the textile sector, making net-zero emissions a tangible reality.

Our nylon depolymerization technology is groundbreaking, enabling the breakdown of nylon-rich textile waste into circular virgin-equivalent nylon monomers, while also separating materials like elastane, cotton, and polyester for further recycling. Supported by the esteemed accelerator Entrepreneur First, we are in the process of finalizing our seed funding round. What lies ahead? We aim to rapidly scale our process to produce recycled nylon for our clientele, which includes some of the largest fashion brands globally.

Position Overview

We are in search of a Lead Production Chemistry Technician with extensive experience in organic synthesis and purification methodologies.

As our Lead Production Technician, you will be instrumental in the creation of recycled polyamides that will be supplied to our clients. Your duties will encompass the establishment of large-scale reactions in flasks and reactors, as well as the purification of the resultant monomers and the optimization of large-scale reaction conditions. Your insights will be vital for enhancing our processes.

You will collaborate closely with the founders and a motivated team to integrate our technology into existing industry practices. If you aspire to make a significant impact in an early-stage startup focused on decarbonizing the textile industry, this opportunity is tailored for you.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will be pivotal in transitioning our innovative technology into a scalable process. Key responsibilities include:

Production

  • Establish large-scale reactions for the synthesis of monomers and polymers for our clients.
  • Operate and maintain reactors (up to 100 L capacity).
  • Conduct separation and purification of organic compounds at both small and large scales (up to 10 kg).
  • Optimize conditions and troubleshoot during the preparation of large-scale reactions.

Research & Development and Analysis

  • Contribute to project advancements alongside the team (synthesis & purification). Your observations and reports on scale-up reactions will be crucial for process development.
  • Screening of conditions, experimental design, optimization, and scale-up.
  • Develop and conduct chemical analyses on recycled monomers and polymers, assessing their purity.
  • Characterize polymer properties (NMR, DSC, TGA, rheology, etc.).

Qualifications

Education & Background:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in chemistry with a robust technical foundation in organic chemistry.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a knack for quickly understanding complex concepts and adapting to new challenges.
  • Proven autonomy and initiative in projects, with a history of delivering results in a dynamic environment.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in industry or working on industrial projects in academia.

Chemistry Skills:

  • Hands-on experience and problem-solving capabilities related to processes and equipment.
  • Experience working with reactors greater than 5L.
  • 4+ years of experience in purification processes (distillation, recrystallization, sublimation, etc.) within R&D Tech Transfer projects.
  • 4+ years of experience in the characterization of organic compounds and/or polymers.
