Overview

Software Heritage is a comprehensive software source code archive initiative, aimed at recovering, preserving for the long term, and sharing all publicly accessible source code along with its development history (as stored in version control systems). The Software Heritage archive currently holds over 17 billion unique source files and 3.6 billion commits, sourced from more than 266 million software development projects. This initiative, hosted by the Inria Foundation, operates as a free software (FOSS) and non-profit project.

The Software Heritage team consists of 14 members, including 8 technical professionals (4 developers and 4 system administrators). Our core values emphasize autonomy, transparency, and collaboration (the project is free and open source).

Responsibilities

We are seeking a senior backend software engineer to contribute to our development team, focusing on the following areas:

  • Design and implement new functionalities for Software Heritage in alignment with the project roadmap and specifications from management.
  • Assist in the development of software components associated with research projects utilizing data from the Software Heritage archive (big data, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, etc.).
  • Engage in the maintenance of Software Heritage components (both backend and frontend).
  • Ensure a robust codebase by adhering to contemporary software development best practices (DVCS, continuous integration, unit testing, refactoring, documentation, code review, etc.).
Key Activities
  • Software development for Software Heritage, primarily using Python.
  • Analyze requirements and design software solutions in collaboration with project stakeholders.
  • Document, review code, test, and integrate solutions.
  • Actively participate in team dynamics.
  • Interact with relevant Open Source communities and Software Heritage partners.
Required Skills
  • Experience with large databases (SQL/NoSQL).
  • Familiarity with distributed software architectures.
  • Proficiency in continuous integration tools (versioning, testing, etc.).

Knowledge and experience in the following areas will be advantageous:

  • Big Data expertise.
  • Development of APIs using GraphQL.
  • Understanding of user research (UX) and UI design principles.
  • Experience with container technologies (e.g., Docker).
  • Knowledge of distributed scheduling technologies (e.g., RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc.).
