Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the contract life cycle, providing legal advice, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, draft, review, negotiate, and amend contracts with national and international partners and service providers.
- Provide legal counsel and advice on research, institutional, and corporate activities in various jurisdictions.
- Conduct legal and risk assessments, and maintain the Legal Contractual Risk Matrix and the Grant Obligation Matrix.
- Research and analyze treaties, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance and provide legal advice.
- Ensure CIMMYT is up-to-date with legal and regulatory requirements in Mexico and other jurisdictions.
- Track and follow up on entrusted matters, and prepare progress updates and reports.
- Implement and monitor the continuous improvement of contract life cycle processes.
- Provide legal support and advice on institutional compliance and represent CIMMYT before government agencies and authorities.
- Support corporate governance functions, issuance and management of Power of Attorney, and drafting of minutes.
- Oversee staff, interns, and consultants engaged in contract life cycle management, and coordinate with outside counsel.
- Prepare educational materials and support the drafting, review, and implementation of legal policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Law, with a Master's degree or LL.M. in Corporate, International, or IP Law desirable.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in similar roles or activities, with additional experience in private and public sector industry related to agricultural R&D and biotechnology a plus.
- Advanced level of English, with a minimum C1 score on CEFR.
- Excellent organizational, writing, research, and communication skills, including the ability to communicate legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe software, with experience in ticketing systems software desirable.
- Strong sense of urgency and commitment to responsibilities and deadlines.
- Collaboration, people management, customer orientation, proactivity, problem-solving, and achievement orientation competencies.
