This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes. The Division of IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories consists of three laboratories, which are located in Monaco. The Division supports Member States in enhancing their capacity to use nuclear and isotopic techniques to understand marine and atmospheric environmental processes and dynamics, and to identify and address environmental problems caused by radioactive and non-radioactive pollutants and climate change. Main Purpose Reporting to the Laboratory Head, the Laboratory Technician (Geochronology, Marine Carbon Cycle) is responsible for planning and carrying out laboratory activities for geochronology and ocean carbon cycling studies and is responsible for organising of and participating in research vessel-based field missions on the ocean. In addition, the incumbent contributes to training of fellows and scientific visitors in oceanographic sampling techniques at sea and in the laboratory. Functions / Key Results Expected - Organizing and participating in sea-going missions for Radioecology Laboratory’s research and training programmes. This involves coordination of Radioecology-related ship-based work and arranging cruise logistics with national authorities, carrying out water column, sediment and biota sampling at sea using a variety of oceanographic instrumentation and the treatment of data obtained from these instruments; - Contribution to daily planning of laboratory work for geochronology and carbon cycling studies; - Preparing and analysing of marine samples for radionuclides, carbon, nitrogen, pigments and other biological parameters (laboratory radiometric and elemental analyses), and provides recommendations for process improvements; - Assist the research scientists in sediment dating, data preparation of scientific reports and manuscripts for publication; - Contribute to training to fellows and scientific visitors in the use of standard and sophisticated oceanographic sampling instrumentation at sea and in the laboratory.
