**ABOUT YOUR ROLE**

Descartes Underwriting is seeking an **R&D Data Scientist **to join our R&D Team. You will be a key contributor to the deployment of R&D projects. The applicant will be in close and effective cooperation with all business units and play a vital role in the following activities:

- Proposing and implementing improvements to our climate risk models;
- Surveying new advances in risk modeling and critically assessing their relevance to Descartes’ risk modeling strategy;
- Strengthening our core modeling knowledge on specific perils;
- Identifying, implementing, and deploying improvements of the current insurance product offering;
- Collaborating with the underwriting and business teams to ensure our products are efficiently integrated into the underwriting process and meet our clients’ needs;
- Working autonomously and pragmatically to make appropriate technical decisions.

**ABOUT YOU**

**EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS**
- Master’s Degree in physics, applied mathematics, or meteorological studies;
- Multi-disciplinary curriculum, with strong skills in statistics, applied mathematics and machine learning;
- Ideally a previous experience in climate modeling or data science;
- Working autonomously and pragmatically to make appropriate technical decisions.

**SKILLS**
- Proficiency in Python and data science;
- Fluency in English (written and verbal communication) required;
- Good command of one additional language (e.g. Chinese, French, Italian, German, Spanish )** valued.**

**MINDSET**
- Interested in weather and natural perils modelling (wildfires, hail, tsunamis, earthquakes etc.);
- Strong team spirit and ability to work under pressure;
- Highly motivated, able to meet deadlines set;
- Motivated to help improving businesses’ and communities’ resilience to climate change;
