You will have access to cutting-edge equipment and top-tier research resources to successfully complete your assignments.- Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) provide a direct communication pathway between brain and external devices. BCIs are designed to interpret brain signals, enabling individuals with motor disabilities to control devices for movement substitution, restoration and rehabilitation. With five spinal cord injury patients implanted with WIMAGINE electrocorticographic (ECoG) recording implants and four ongoing clinical trials in France1 and Switzerland2 (EPFL, Neurorestore, Lausanne), CLINATEC is a key international leader in the field of implanted BCIs. A critical focus of CLINATEC’s current and future clinical trials is evaluating the potential for BCIs to facilitate motor rehabilitation in implanted patients.-
- Identify biomarkers of motor learning and neural plasticity within the sensorimotor cortex (the site of ECoG implantation) by reviewing existing state-of-the-art methods, such as brain connectivity analysis and neural pattern evolution over time,
- Get familiar with the scientific library (Matlab/Python) currently used in the team for data handling and processing, so as to develop and implement new signal processing tools necessary to compute the selected biomarkers,
- Conduct a longitudinal study on neural plasticity in implanted patients, tracking their progression during BCI training over several years. If needed, additional experiments with patients might be performed to supplement the findings.
