**Nuclear Waste Technician**
**Context**
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is an international centre for fundamental research. It is Europe's leading centre for research using neutrons and operates the brightest neutron source in the world. You will join the ILL’s Radioactive Waste Management and Decontamination Group (GTDA), comprising a Head of Group, an engineer and four technicians.
**Your tasks**
As a technician within the GTDA group, which is part of the ILL’s Health Physics, Safety and Environment Service (SRSE), you will play a key role in the production of radioisotopes, the treatment and management of radioactive waste, and work operations performed in radioactive environments at the ILL.
This post is primarily related to the production of radioisotopes. Here you will have the following main duties:
- Installing the containment tent on the hot cell roof and bringing the necessary equipment to the work site
- Preparing the shielded casks (vinyl sheeting and bolting)
- Removing the vinyl sheeting and decontaminating the casks once they are removed through the hot cell roof
In the context of radioactive waste management, you will have the following duties:
- Collecting and sorting waste produced at the facility
- Dismantling mechanical parts and cutting up bulky waste
- Conditioning waste in the appropriate packaging
- Assisting with waste characterisation using gamma spectrometry and with x-ray inspections of waste drums
- Assisting with the loading of radioactive waste packages for transport
- Performing on-site waste transport operations
In the context of work operations in radioactive environments, your duties will include:
- Decontaminating specific areas (e.g. reactor pool, hot cell, active effluent tanks) and mechanical parts and tools
- Assisting those working in a radioactive environment to put on and take off protective clothing and helping to maintain the radiological cleanliness of the work sites
- Installing/dismantling containment tents
- Glove box and hot cell operations:
- removing items under containment conditions
- decontamination operations
- replacing gloves under containment conditions.
**Your profile**
- You have a relevant Level 2 or Level 3 qualification (NVQ or equivalent) or have completed training as a radiation protection technician or as a technician specialising in radioactive waste management and work and decontamination operations in radioactive environments (or equivalent)
- Experience of working in a nuclear environment is desirable
- You have knowledge and experience of working in radioactive environments
- You have expertise in dismantling and cutting techniques for metals
- You are well organised and able to work independently
- A strong team spirit is essential.
