The Inria centre at Université Côte d'Azur includes 42 research teams and 9 support services. The centre's staff (about 500 people) is made up of scientists of different nationalities, engineers, technicians and administrative staff. The teams are mainly located on the university campuses of Sophia Antipolis and Nice as well as Montpellier, in close collaboration with research and higher education laboratories and establishments (Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, INRAE, INSERM...), but also with the regiona economic players.
With a presence in the fields of computational neuroscience and biology, data science and modeling, software engineering and certification, as well as collaborative robotics, the Inria Centre at Université Côte d'Azur is a major player in terms of scientific excellence through its results and collaborations at both European and international levels.

**Mission confiée**:
This PhD thesis project is part of the ANR project FREEFORM (Refinable
Freeform Splines with Theoretical Guarantees for their Approximation
Power via Polynomial Reproduction, ANR-24-CE91-0001), which is a joint
project between Centre Inria d'Université Côte d'Azur and the Johannes
Kepler Universität Linz, Austria related to the study of new spline
constructions that are suitable for design and analysis purposes. In
particular, this project aims at the development of a novel framework
for high-order discretization of partial differential equations on
general domains. The latter pose challenges related to their topology
and in particular at the vicinity of, so called, extraordinary
vertices where smoothness requirements and superior approximation
power are paramount for efficient simulations.
Free-form-spline representations have been a central topic in
geometric modeling since the field's inception. The main focus of the
research was on the two requirements of controllability and shape
quality. FREEFORM shall develop a framework of geometrically
continuous splines, called Refinable FreeForm (RFF-) Splines, to
enable numerical schemes for topologically unrestricted design and
analysis. The work focuses on the paradigm of isogeometric analysis
that uses spline functions for design and analysis on non-linear
geometries. The use of geometrically continuous splines is a
promising way to create discretizations on surfaces and general
free-form domains, since any geometrically continuous surface
construction corresponds to a construction for smooth elements.

Gross Salary per month: 2200€ brut per month (for 2025) and 2300€ brut per month (for 2026).
**Principales activités**:
- Develop the theory and implementation of the RFF-spline technology
- Collaborate with other team members and with the ANR project partner
- Disseminate research results, by publications and presentations at international conferences
**Compétences**:
- Master or equivalent degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related field
- Knowledge around splines and NURBS, computer-aided design, applied linear algebra, and an interest in mathematics.
- Programming in the C++ programming language and some experience in collaborative software development.
- Prior experience on the topic of isogeometric analysis or geometrically continuous splines is a plus.
