Within Bell Labs, the "Optical Systems & Devices Research" lab investigates forward-looking research activities for the preparation of the future optical transport networks that will interconnect data centers, cities and continents. Until recently, such networks were expected to provide ever increasing capacity, flexibility and agility at reduced costs and energy footprint. Lately, a new dimension, security, emerges as a separate, high-priority need.
The future optical fabric offers digital services down to the physical network layer by introducing platforms to collect, visualize, analyze, and learn from the collected data. In this direction, a lot of effort has been put into the development of a network digital twin, i.e. a digital representation of the optical network which can be used to understand the optical network evolution in time (i.e. after its deployment), anticipating issues, troubleshooting etc. Digital twin for synchronous optimizations and real-time network healing requires massive monitoring, performance predictions, local and centralized decision-making, machine learning. The digital twin can be instrumental in building a secure and robust fiber infrastructure, enabling new services where the prevention of malevolent incidents and fast recovery is particularly required.
How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn
The internship work concerns the physical layer of an optical network. Fiber propagation is governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and the transmitted signal is eventually distorted by effects like chromatic dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, amplifier spontaneous emission noise, etc. The split-step Fourier method is the main tool used to numerically estimate the signal field after propagation, while other simplified tools like the Gaussian noise (GN) model, offer fast alternatives for performance estimation. The intern will work in this context, in the core of fiber optic propagation physics.
Objectives:
- Perform a review on physical layer optical networks security solutions and digital-twin-related literature
- Investigate by numerical simulations threats scenarios and quantify the level of risk. Develop simple rules to incorporate security metrics while allocating network equipment.
- Demonstrate experimentally the threat and solution proposed with commercial or laboratory equipment.
- Deliver a report and presentations on the work accomplished
Key Skills And Experience
- Some background in the physics of optics, digital communications.
- MATLAB programming or equivalent, e.g. python
- Eager to work in a team and develop new skills
- Strong spoken and written technical English
If you also have skills either in ML/AI or information theory, it would be a plus.
