Grenoble, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France Institut Laue Langevin Temps plein

Core mission

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for scientific research using neutrons. Every year, we host over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to the Institute to carry out world-class research.

Come and join the "Vacuum" team, which is part of Mechanical Service of the Experimental Halls (SMAE) within the ILL's Projects and Techniques Division. We are looking to recruit a maintenance or mechanical engineering technician. The successful candidate will work directly with the other technicians in the Vacuum laboratory group and will be specifically responsible for the maintenance, operation and in-service monitoring of vacuum systems on all equipment used for our scientific experiments.

Your tasks

  • Guarantee the availability of the vacuum systems in the experimental halls to help ensure that the ILL's user programme of experiments runs to schedule.
  • Install, connect and repair vacuum pump sets, including carrying out leak tests.
  • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on all vacuum pump sets (primary and secondary pumps).
  • Manage contacts with the subcontractors responsible for pump set maintenance and monitor their work; manage relations with parts suppliers.
  • Purchase small equipment and spare parts as necessary, in coordination with the other members of the group.
  • Perform handling and lifting operations for the installation and maintenance of pump sets.
  • Manufacture simple welded assemblies (e.g. support frames for pump sets).
  • Contribute to maintaining the safety and compliance of vacuum systems.
  • Provide technical support and advice to users.
  • Work with the other groups within the SMAE and provide additional support during reactor shutdown periods.

Your profile

  • You have a Level 4 or Level 5 technical qualification (HNC/HND or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or maintenance.
  • Experience in the maintenance of vacuum equipment or pumping systems (ideally in an industrial or research environment) is desirable.
  • Skills in reading engineering drawings and assembling and installing technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of electricity, instrumentation and brazing or welding techniques would be appreciated.
  • Proficiency in basic IT tools and familiarity with CMMS software.
  • You must be meticulous and well organised and able to work independently.
  • You must be fluent in French and speak good technical English to be able to communicate orally.
