Contexte et atouts du poste

We are looking for an ambitious 2-year postdoctoral scholar to join a European project, GAIA, studying the subject of biodegradable ultra low-power electronics. The position will start at the commencement of the project, 1-Feb 2026.

The postdoctoral scholar will be working in the Inria-AIO team ) at the Paris center, in the heart of the city in the 13th arrondissement.

Mission confiée

The GAIA project aims to design electronics for a ubiquitous and ecologically-aware Internet of Things. The project will solve this with a completely revolutionary approach to electronic design by using transient and biodegradeable materials. These new devices will be able to perform computation and communication with energy harvested from the environment and from ambient wireless signals. The PhD student will be part of the design and electronic characterization of these devices as well as proof-of-concept prototype electronics that will be manufactured in more traditional solid-state processes.

As part of this project, you will be expected to work closely with a multi-national European consortium consisting of experts in telecommunications, embedded systems, RFID, integrated circuits, and printed electronics. You will also be supported closely, day-to-day, with a researcher, an engineer, and a doctoral student.

Principales activités

Main activities:

• conduct state-of-the-art research on energy scavenging CMOS and printed electronic circuits
• design electronics to interface with printed RFID passives
• assist with design, verification, and tape-out an application-specific integrated circuit
• eventually, design wireless, baseband, and digital components using printed devices on biodegradeable substrates

Additional activities:

• assist with supervision of the doctoral candidate
• publish papers in top-quality journals and present work at conferences
• collaborate closely with other members of the European Project consortium

Compétences

• A deep understanding of Electrical Engineering fundamentals (voltage, current, reference circuits, amplifiers, oscillators, noise, power, design tradeoffs, electricity & magnetism, microelectronic design, etc.)
• Some understanding of computing systems, such as computer architecture and embedded systems
• Strong familiarity with commercial Integrated Circuit design tools, such as Virtuoso, Spectre, VCS, Calibre, etc.
• Some experience with compact modeling of devices using verilog-A
• Preferably, prior experience with CMOS tape-outs OR a familiarity with printed processes and device characterization
• Ability to perform literature surveys and understand state-of-the-art research
• Excellent technical presentation and writing ability
• Language: day-to-day research will be conducted in English. Knowledge of French is helpful but not mandatory.

L'essentiel pour réussir

A good candidate should have a track-record of performing state-of-the-art research both individually and should also be capable of working as part of a team of scholars. They should also be able to clearly present their results both locally and within the consortium in order to facilitate successful collaboration. An ideal candidate will have significant experience with a broad range of integrated circuit designs including digital, analog, mixed-signal, and radio-frequency electronics. Alternatively, if a candidate has a background in physical electronics, experience with modeling and characterization of printed devices is critical. A PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on either Integrated Circuit design or with a focus on printed physical electronic design, modeling, and characterization is necessary. An alternative is a PhD in Materials Science/Engineering, also in either Integrated Circuits or with a focus on printed electronics.
