Looking for a Postdoctoral Candidate – Project Proposal (JCJC Call) | University of Caen

Our research team is currently preparing a project proposal for a call (University of Caen) and is seeking a potential postdoctoral candidate in order to apply for the funding of an 18-month postdoctoral position.

Project background

The project focuses on the production of PHA biopolymers through fermentation. Scaling up from lab-scale bioreactors (2 L) to pilot-scale systems (40 L) remains challenging due to oxygen gradients, hydrodynamic heterogeneities, and rheological effects. The objective is to develop predictive modeling tools to better understand and control these phenomena.

Objectives

• Multi-scale modeling of:
• microbial kinetics,
• oxygen and substrate mass transfer,
• hydrodynamics and heterogeneities (2 L → 40 L).
• Development of a digital twin integrating:
• real-time experimental data,
• an intelligent sensor (microfluidic / optical),
• data–model coupling and state estimation methods.
• Experimental validation on a 40 L pilot-scale bioreactor.

Candidate profile

• PhD obtained within the last 5 years (JCJC eligibility),
• Expertise in at least one of the following areas:
• numerical modeling,
• multiphysics simulation (COMSOL or similar),
• digital twins, data–model coupling, state estimation.
• Interest in bioprocess engineering is a plus but not mandatory.
