Job Description:
Responsible for the management of Language Services within an assigned service area. Manages and trains a team of Language Services staff who interpret and coordinate interpretation needs. Assists in the training and qualification of bilingual staff for interpretation and translation services.Responsible for day to day operations of Language Services staff including hiring and performance management. Supervises staff to ensure complete and accurate interpretation and translation services for patients, families, and health care providers in order to facilitate communication.
Works with Language Services Supervisors, Coordinators, and Interpreters to ensure appropriate staffing levels and optimize productivity based on work volumes. Measures and documents performance of the department using methods such as observation and operation/variance reporting and control systems. Accountable for controlling the Language Services budget including internal expense, revenue, and external contract/vendor expenses.
Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, training, coordination and retention of staff Interpreters, Language Services Coordinators, Supervisors, and Qualified Bilingual Staff. Responsible for performance management, including goal setting, performance evaluations and constructive discipline. Responsible for ongoing education and training of staff, including appropriate orientation and staff meetings.
Consults with and provides support to hospitals and facilities regarding their multicultural educational needs.
Identifies educational needs and participates in creating and implementing strategies for program development and coordination of the delivery of language interpretation services in accordance with ADA, Title VI, section 1557 of the ACA, and cultural competency to ensure culturally appropriate care to patients, maintaining quality, consistency, and financial viability.
Maintains and encourages open, flexible communication with coworkers, hospital personnel, and physicians to create a positive team environment and a seamless service delivery.
Coordinates with facilities to provide training for bilingual staff in order to qualify them to communicate directly with patients in their preferred language and/or act as interpreters in the work setting. Also provides training related to multi-cultural issues, diversity, and communication assistance.
Responsible for compliance with federal, state, and other regulatory bodies related to language barriers and equal access to healthcare within assigned facilities.
Remains informed with current regulatory requirements and changes. Informs and educates management and staff of such changes.
Implements corporate language services team initiatives in collaboration with the 504 coordinator / compliance officers.
Acts as educator, liaison, and resource for hospital or clinic staff, medical staff, and community at large regarding multicultural patient care.
Provides complete and accurate interpretation for patients, patients' families, and staff in order to facilitate communication. Uses culturally sensitive communication methods appropriate for patient developmental age and mental condition. Oversees and approves the translation of approved written material into English and target language.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.
State Medical Language Interpreter Certification (if applicable).
Completes Intermountain's medical interpretation exam (if not completed previously). Note: Employee will complete Intermountain's medical interpretation exam upon hire, if not previously completed. If exam is not passed, employee will be removed from the position.
Demonstrated excellent oral and written command of both source and target language. Ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with a high degree of accuracy in both languages.
Demonstrated knowledge of advanced medical terminology in both languages, and knowledge of medical procedures.
Three years related interpretation experience.
Two years of supervisor experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree.
National Medical/Healthcare Interpreter certification.
Experience working with language access or similar programs in health care services.
Fluent in three or more languages.
Physical Requirements:
