The Climate and Climate Services Directorate (DCSC) is a central directorate of Météo-France, in charge of all activities related to climatology (e.g., climate records) and climate services. At DCSC, the Climate and Seasonal Analysis Department (ACS) is responsible for monitoring and analyzing changes in hydroclimatic conditions across France and anticipating how they will evolve over the course of the season. ACS coordinates or directly produces and publishes the corresponding reports in collaboration with various users. It is also responsible for exploiting the outputs of seasonal forecast models. Finally, it is in charge of promoting their use through sectoral climate services.

The research engineer will carry out software developments for analysis of climate data. The purpose of these developments is to compute diagnostics and output graphical products for the interpretation and evaluation of Copernicus C3S seasonal forecasts.

More precisely, the main tasks will focus on:

1) Implementation of a method previously designed at CNRM on data from the Copernicus Climate Data Store. This method aims at quantifying the seasonal forecasts temperature anomalies that are attributable to global warming.

2) Implementation of a new diagnostic for atmospheric circulation to seasonal forecast data. This diagnostic is designed to identify the areas of cyclonic and anticyclonic curvature in pressure and geopotential fields (CURV diagnostic1).

These developments will be implemented as documented code in Jupyter notebooks, so as to make them usable both by Météo-France (DCSC and CNRM) and by the C3S partners. The recruited engineer may also decide to value these developments under the form of scientific communications (publications and conferences).

If needed, the position may include other software engineering tasks related to the maintenance of Météo-France internal tools used in seasonal forecasting.

The required skills and qualifications are the following:

1) A Master of Science degree or equivalent

2) Autonomy, ability to take initiatives and scientific curiosity

3) English proficiency is mandatory, both to interact with the C3S partner and to read and write technical and scientific documentation

4) Experience in data analysis and a background in statistics

5) Experience in programming with Python and/or R, and experience with the Unix Shell environment

Although not mandatory, knowledge in atmospheric and climate sciences, or any related scientific domain, will be a distinct advantage. Previous experience with Jupyter notebooks will also be appreciated.
