Short Description: This internship will focus on developing reduced hydrogen recycling models for assessing ITER fueling control scenarios. Using the open-source FESTIM environment, parametric studies of dynamic hydrogen cycling will be performed. The goal is to derive simplified models that capture key wall-plasma interaction effects. Their potential impact on fueling and isotopic content control will be assessed.
Description of tasks:
Task 1: Employ the open-source FESTIM simulation environment to perform parametric studies of hydrogen uptake and release in ITER-relevant materials and conditions.
Task 2: Support with development of reduced-order models that capture the essential physics of hydrogen recycling (e.g., trapping, release, saturation) at the time scale relevant for fueling control.
Task 3: Compare reduced model predictions with full FESTIM simulations to validate accuracy and identify limitations.
Task 4: Extend to reactor-scale simulations using the PFC Tritium Transport / FESTIM framework, in order to evaluate how spatial variations in wall conditions influence the time scales of hydrogen recycling dynamics.
The ITER Organization offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students with the objective of providing these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study, whilst collaborating in an international, scientific and multicultural environment. Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns. The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
