In the field of infrastructure, 75% of the 12,500 bridges in France's non-concessionary road network contain structural concrete elements. With an initial design life of 50 years, the average age of these bridges is 45-55 years, raising questions about their durability. Extending the service life of these bridges is a major challenge.
Corrosion is the primary cause of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures and is caused by the carbonation of the concrete cover and/or the penetration of chloride ions.
To diagnose the state of corrosion in reinforced concrete, the conventional approach is to use non-destructive testing (NDT) carried out on the concrete facing at specific intervals. NDT is based on measurements of resistance, potential, current, etc., and is carried out on the concrete facing using construction site equipment and/or laboratory potentiostats connected to the steel reinforcement.
Problem
The aim is to participate in the design of a miniaturised, multi-parameter wireless measurement system for monitoring corrosion in reinforced concrete, overcoming constraints related to bulkiness, robustness and data transmission.
Planned work phases
- Bibliographic analysis: study of existing electrochemical sensors used to measure corrosion in reinforced concrete (resistivity, potential, polarisation resistance) and their limitations (size, data collection, portability, etc.).
- Familiarisation with the measurement technique: determination of concrete corrosion using a potentiostat: Gecorr and concentric electrode probe.
- Design of an alternative solution:
- Miniaturisation: Design of a smaller multi-depth corrosion sensors for more discreet integration, particularly on historic monuments.
- Wireless cnnectivity: Selectin and adaptation of wireless communication technology (such as LoRaWAN or Bluetooth Low Energy) suitable for data transmission in constrained environments.
- Integration and housing: Design of a robust, low-power acquisition and communication housing capable of collecting and transmitting data from multiple sensors.
- Development and prototyping:
- Implementatin of a functional prototype of the miniaturised sensor system.
- Development of firmware for processing raw data, converting it into digital data and transmitting it.
- Validation and testing:
- Laboratory tests to assess the reliability, accuracy and autonomy of the system.
- Possibility of testing on a small-scale prototype.
Required profile: Master's degree or final-year engineering student
This subject is ideal for students studying electronics, embedded systems or instrumentation. It is very practical and has potential for industrial application and patenting.
This project is funded by a national project (ANR Maestro). A PhD is planned.
