Your role

Purpose of the Mission:

Steelmaking is a resource-intensive industry. At ArcelorMittal, various strategies are being studied and implemented to reduce energy consumption and optimize material usage. One of the key pathways to achieving ArcelorMittal's 2050 carbon neutrality objective is the Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) process, which significantly lowers CO₂ emissions compared to traditional blast furnace routes.

The aim of this internship is to develop and refine a comprehensive model of the DRI process, incorporating all relevant physical and chemical phenomena. This model will be used to estimate energy requirements, CO₂ emissions, operational costs, and other performance indicators, supporting decision-making for future low-carbon steelmaking technologies.

Mission: Accountabilities and Activities:

During the internship, the student will:

• Conduct a literature review to understand the DRI process, its industrial applications, and the current state of modeling approaches.

• Develop and refine process models, starting from simple unit operations (e.g., gas compression) and progressing to complex multiphase systems involving solid-gas interactions and chemical reactions.

• Use simulation and modeling tools such as AVEVA, Python, MATLAB, or other relevant software to build and integrate models.

• Adapt existing models where available, develop missing components, and integrate them into a complete plant

simulation.

• Refine the kinetic reduction model using experimental or industrial measurements from various pellet types.

• Perform a comparative analysis of pellet performance in terms of reduction efficiency, energy consumption, and CO₂ emissions within the DRI plant context.

• Document results and provide recommendations for process optimization.

Expected Deliverables:

• A validated DRI process model incorporating kinetic and thermodynamic aspects.

• A comparative study report on pellet types and their impact on reduction performance.

• Energy and CO₂ estimation framework for different operating scenarios.

Environment:

The internship will take place at ArcelorMittal Research & Development Maizières Process site, within the Process

Engineering Department. The intern will work closely with the Process Energy team and collaborate with experts in process modeling and industrial research. This experience will provide exposure to:

• Advanced industrial research methodologies.

• Basics of project management and technical communication.

• A multidisciplinary team environment focused on innovation and sustainability.
