Working at NLRJoin the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), where world-class scientists, engineers, and experts are accelerating energy innovation through breakthrough research and systems integration. From our mission to our collaborative culture, NLR stands out in the research community for its commitment to an affordable and secure energy future. Spanning foundational science to applied systems engineering and analysis, we focus on solving complex challenges to deliver advanced, secure, reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions. Our work helps strengthen U.S. industries, support job creation, and promote national economic growth.
At NLR, you'll find a mission-driven environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities, multidisciplinary research teams, and strong collaborations with industry, academia, and other national laboratories. We offer robust professional development opportunities, and a competitive benefits package designed to support your career and well-being.
Job DescriptionNLR's Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) works on all aspects of grid integration of advanced energy technologies. Within PSEC, the Integrated Devices and Systems group focuses on fast timescale challenges related to integration of high levels of inverter-based resources (IBRs), using techniques including power hardware-in-the-loop experimentation, power electronics, phasor-domain dynamic modeling, electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling, grid integration standards, advanced protection, and advanced controls including grid-forming inverter controls, etc. We often lead research in NREL's power labs including the Energy Systems Integration Facility and the Flatirons Campus. We work closely with industry partners and leading academic researchers to identify solutions for the rapidly evolving power system.
• Develop EMT models in real-time simulators and hardware-in-the-loop platforms for high-power converters interfacing various MW-scale distributed energy resources.
• Develop advanced control methods for high-power converters at different timescales and layers, such as grid-forming control and grid-support functions to improve system performance during transients and steady state and also for non-ideal grid conditions (unbalanced loading, faults, etc.).
• Validate medium-voltage, high-power converter controller and power hardware using the medium-voltage power electronics testing capability at NREL ESIF facility.
• Develop decentralized control techniques to improve the scalability of the modular power converters (e.g., CHB-DAB and MMCs), including PWM interleaving, inter-isolation-barrier decentralized control, communication-less power sharing, and decentralized fault-tolerant control.
• Collaborate with experts at NREL and industry stakeholders
