Location

This role can be fully remote in France (with occasional travel to our London or Paris office). Regular presence in our Paris office would be a plus.

What you will be doing

As a Staff Engineer at Semble, you will be one of our most senior individual contributors, acting as a technical leader and multiplier across multiple teams. You won't have direct reports, but you will play a pivotal role in guiding our technology, unblocking complex initiatives, and raising the bar for engineering excellence.

You will:

Provide high‑impact technical leadership

Operate as a go‑to problem solver for our most challenging technical issues. You will develop a deep understanding of our codebase and systems, support teams with critical decisions, and serve as a clear point of escalation when stakes are high. You will champion high standards for code quality, reliability, security, scalability, and performance, and you will often lead the response and postmortems for major incidents.

Shape and evolve our architecture

Work closely with Tech Leads and the VP of Technology to define, communicate, and evolve our long‑term architectural direction. You will help maintain a clear view of technical debt, migrations, and foundational investments, and act as a neutral voice when teams need to reach alignment on architectural choices.

Drive cross‑team impact on strategic projects

Stay close to multiple delivery teams, especially on high‑impact, multi‑team initiatives. You will help ensure end‑to‑end coherence when features span multiple domains, and you'll contribute directly where depth or speed is needed—whether that's designing critical components, improving interfaces between services, or simplifying complex systems.

Mentor and grow engineering talent

Lead by example and help others grow. You will mentor engineers through 1:1s, informal coaching, and deep‑dive sessions, and you will look for opportunities to spread knowledge across teams. Reducing key‑person risk, building shared understanding, and helping high‑potential engineers progress will be a core part of your impact.

Influence tooling and technology strategy

Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and practices that improve developer experience and delivery. You will be opinionated about simplicity—fewer, better tools—and ensure that teams have the technical foundations they need to move fast without compromising quality.

Support innovation & exploration

Participate in discovery sprints, prototypes, and hackathons, helping to turn promising ideas into robust, production‑ready solutions. You'll help connect innovation outside the roadmap with real product and business value.

Contribute to hiring & organisational health

Help identify capability gaps, shape role profiles, and participate in interviews and hiring decisions for key technical roles. You will support knowledge sharing and cross‑training, making Semble's engineering organisation stronger, faster, and more cohesive over time.

In practice, you will operate as a "floating expert": sometimes embedded in a delivery team to accelerate delivery or transfer expertise, sometimes leading a small tiger team to explore a new domain or build a prototype, and sometimes driving focused technical initiatives that benefit the whole organisation (for example, reducing operational toil or improving shared tooling).

What we are looking for

At a Staff Engineer level at Semble, we expect you to have a broad, system‑level view of our platform and organisation, and a track record of driving meaningful technical change without formal authority. You are comfortable zooming from high‑level architecture into concrete implementation details, and you care deeply about enabling others to do their best work.

For this role specifically, we would like you to have:

• Deep technical experience in modern software engineering
• Fluent French.
  A basic practical understanding of the french health system, even if only as a patient, is necessary.
• Strong background designing, building, and operating complex distributed systems or large‑scale web applications. Our stack includes TypeScript, React, , MongoDB, and AWS, so experience with some or all of these is highly desirable.
• A proven track record of technical leadership as an individual contributor
• Experience acting as a Staff/Principal Engineer, Tech Lead, or equivalent, where you influenced architecture, led complex projects, and improved systems beyond a single team's remit—ideally in a high‑growth or product‑led environment.
• Ability to navigate complexity and drive clarity
• Comfortable working in ambiguous problem spaces, breaking down complex challenges, and guiding teams towards pragmatic, scalable solutions. You back your opinions with data and experience, while staying open to other viewpoints.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to build trusted relationships with engineers, product managers, designers, and commercial stakeholders. You can explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Focus on mentoring and raising the bar
• Demonstrated experience mentoring other engineers, spreading best practices, and positively influencing engineering culture. You care about helping others grow, not just shipping your own code.
• Experience in agile, cross‑functional environments
• Familiarity with agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban, and with working in cross‑functional teams focused on delivering outcomes, not just output.

Bonus:

• Previous experience in healthtech.
• Experience working in remote‑first, distributed teams.
