Short Description: This internship will be focused on applying magnetic control algorithms to control the plasma shape, vertical position and current for the various phases of an ITER pulse, as simulated by the Pulse Design Simulator (PDS). We will use the magnetic controllers from the Plasma Control System Simulation Platform (PCSSP) in Simulink, coupling them to the PCS, and study typical transitions that take place during a pulse. We will simulate some of the typical phases of the pulse, e.g. the plasma current ramp-up phase with a handover from limiter to divertor plasma, and a transition from simple position/current control to control of the magnetic flux.

Description of tasks:

Task 1: Get familiar with the various magnetic control strategies: study the magnetic controllers from the ITER Plasma Control System (PCS), its simulation platform (PCSSP), and those used in the DINA free-boundary equilibrium solver, to understand the key principles.
Task 2: Get familiar with the ITER Pulse Design Simulator (PDS) and run it for simple test cases to understand the modelling of the free-boundary equilibrium carried out with the NICE code associated with transport carried out with METIS and/or TORAX transport solvers, associated with a first version of magnetic controllers that are integrated within the PDS.
Task 3: Couple the PCSSP magnetic controllers to PDS in order to tune the controllers gains to the PDS models on a specific scenario.
Task 4: Produce a variation of the specific scenario to modify a characteristic behaviour like e.g. plasma current ramp-up or X-point formation time.

Internship opportunities are limited to nationals from countries participating in the ITER Project (China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russian Federation, and the United States). Their Universities should be also established in the territories of the ITER Members.

 

Please also note that interns are not considered staff members and shall, therefore, not have the status of "Staff" as per the ITER Agreement and the Headquarters Agreement (see more information on these constitutive agreements in Legal Resources).  Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns.  The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
