Duties and Responsibilities

The UN Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-focused, action-oriented initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions – the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEO's mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action – and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. IMEO will create a global public dataset of empirically verified methane emissions, with an initial focus on fossil fuel sources and will interconnect data with actions on research, reporting, and regulation. This will catalyse deep reductions in human-made methane emissions and serve the rapidly growing ecosystem of governments, companies, investors, researchers, NGOs and other entities engaging in this crucial climate challenge. IMEO seeks an analyst that will work on the integration of empirical methane emissions data from diverse spatial and temporal scales to produce high quality actionable data products that will be the core of IMEO's data platform, centered to individuals with the power to reduce emissions. The work will include creating structures and processes to integrate existing and future emissions data from multiple sources (e.g., remote sensing, source and site-level measurement campaigns, inventories), collating such data from public sources and organizing them in a bespoke database. The work will not only be focused on the oil and gas sector but also on the other methane emitting sectors. The work will involve collaboration with the relevant stakeholders, especially original data providers. The consultant will report to the Methane Science Studies Manager.

Qualifications/special skills

A Masters in Energy Management, Environmental Management, or related disciplines. Minimum of 5 years of experience working in energy and environmental management. Track record of working with the oil and gas sector. Expertise with methods and technologies for the detection and quantification of methane emissions.

English is the working language of UNEP's IMEO.

Additional Information

Key responsibilities: Emission data repository: · Identify, retrieve, and read peer-reviewed and gray literature relevant to methane emissions from any methane sector and interpreting recently published (and potentially older) scientific literature of various methane science disciplines (e.g., remote sensing, source and site-level measurement campaigns, inventories). · Extract key quantitative and qualitative data from each study into a structured, pre-designed spreadsheet, and summarize study parameters, techniques, and major results. · Maintain consistency, data quality, and clear documentation of assumptions or interpretations. · Provide feedback on the structure of the database, suggesting changes to make interpretation more straightforward. · Coordinate with team members to prioritize literature and resolve ambiguities in data interpretation. · Provide regular updates on literature reviewed and data input progress. · Contribute to documentation and internal summaries based on findings. Methane Science Studies: · Update Study Masterfile and the Science Study Map (on the Eye on Methane platform), ensuring all entries are current, accurate, and contain all required data Other engagement: · Provide support to other IMEO data integration project efforts as needed. · Support IMEO data integration project management as needed. Deliverables: · Updated records of the emission data repository including newly added emission rates and meta data. · Updated statistics of the composition of the repository. · Updated documentation of the repository. · Organization of select data integration project meetings and events. · Effective coordination on knowledge products including study Masterfile and study map for Eye on Methane Data Platform The consultant will work in close consultation with the UN Environment Programme Paris Office. The outputs need to be accepted by the UNEP to be considered satisfactory.
