Internship – data-driven analysis of behavioral variability

CONTEXTE

Le comportement animal présente une forte variabilité inter- et intra-individuelle, reflétant des interactions complexes entre les dynamiques neuronales internes et les signaux externes issus de l'environnement. Nous cherchons à considérer cette variabilité comme une caractéristique adaptative dans des environnements imprévisibles et à comprendre comment la neuromodulation peut conduire à l'émergence de variations inter-individuelles au cours du développement. Relever ce défi nécessite le développement d'outils théoriques et data-driven permettant de quantifier les différences entre systèmes dynamiques à partir d'observations.

S'appuyant sur nos travaux récents, nous recherchons un·e stagiaire de niveau Master pour travailler avec notre équipe au développement et à l'application d'approches data-driven, fondées sur la physique statistique et la théorie des systèmes dynamiques, afin d'analyser la variabilité inter-individuelle du comportement animal.

Ce projet s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet ANR FORE-SIGHT. Le·la stagiaire sera intégré·e à l'équipe SIBBIL et aura l'opportunité d'interagir avec des doctorant·e·s et des post-doctorant·e·s dans un environnement de recherche interdisciplinaire et international.

MISSIONS PRINCIPALES

L'objectif principal de ce stage est de comparer et d'évaluer des approches data-driven pour l'analyse de la variabilité dans des séries temporelles de comportement animal, et d'évaluer leur capacité à capturer les caractéristiques dynamiques sous-jacentes.

Le·la stagiaire explorera les performances de différentes techniques de modélisation et d'inférence en termes de robustesse, d'interprétabilité et de sensibilité au bruit et aux différences inter-individuelles.

Sous la responsabilité d'Antonio Carlos Costa, le·la stagiaire de Master sera chargé·e des missions suivantes :

• Benchmark de méthodes data-driven pour mesurer des distances entre observations de systèmes dynamiques issues de comportements animaux
• Comparaison des méthodes en termes de performance, de stabilité et d'interprétabilité
• Évaluation des limites des approches et identification des conditions dans lesquelles elles sont efficaces ou échouent

PROFIL RECHERCHÉ

• Étudiant·e de niveau M1 ou M2 en physique, informatique ou mathématiques appliquée

Savoir-faire

• Compétences en programmation : Python
• Expérience en analyse de données et en expérimentations numériques

Savoir

• Bon niveau d'anglais
• Connaissances de base dans au moins un des domaines suivants :

o physique statistique

o systèmes dynamiques

o apprentissage automatique

Savoir-être

• Curiosité et motivation pour la recherche interdisciplinaire
• Capacité à travailler de manière autonome tout en s'intégrant dans une équipe de recherche
• Bonnes capacités de communication

La date de début du stage est flexible.

Une gratification est prévue (4,5€/H).

CONTEXT

Animal behavior exhibits large inter- and intra-individual variability, reflecting complex interactions between internal neural dynamics and external signals from the environment. We aim to frame this variability as an adaptive feature in unpredictable environments and to understand how neuromodulation may drive the emergence of inter-individual variation throughout development. Addressing this challenge requires the development of data-driven and theoretical tools to quantify differences between dynamical systems from time series observations.

Building upon our recent work, we are looking for a MSc intern to work with our team on the development and application of data-driven approaches, grounded in statistical physics and dynamical systems theory, to analyze inter-individual variability in animal behavior.

This project will be carried out within the framework of the ANR project FORE-SIGHT. The intern will be integrated into the SIBBIL team and will have the opportunity to interact with PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in an interdisciplinary and international research environment.

MAIN MISSIONS

The main goal of this internship is to compare data-driven approaches for the analysis of variability among time series of animal behavior.

The intern will explore the performance of different modelling and inference techniques in terms of their robustness, interpretability, and reliability to noise.

Under the supervision of Antonio Carlos Costa, the intern will be in charge of the following tasks:

• Benchmarking different data-driven methods for measuring distance among time series observations from behaving animals
• Evaluate the limits of different approacchs, and the conditions in which they work best

PROFILE

• M1/M2 student in Physics, computer science or applied mathematics

Know-how

• Programming skills: python
• Experience with data analysis and numerical experiments

Knowledge

• Good English level
• Basic knowledge of statistical physics, dynamical systems, or machine learning (at least one)

Soft-skills

• Curiosity and motivation for interdisciplinary research
• Ability to work independently while interacting within a research team
• Good communicator

The start date of the internship is flexible.

A stipend is provided (€4.50/hour).
