The Institute of Molecular Sciences was established on 1 January 2007. It includes 130 permanent staff and nearly 150 PhD and post-doctoral students in 10 research groups, with scientific skills: theoretical chemistry and modeling, organic synthesis, spectroscopy, analytical chemistry, molecular recognition, environmental chemistry.
As part of the OSCARE project, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), we are recruiting a PhD student whose work will focus on metal oxide based heteronanostructures for heterogeneous photocatalysis .
This project covers the study of dissymmetric Heteronanostructures optimized based on metal oxides with separation of load carriers improved for applications in solar energy conversion.

The development of clean and sustainable technologies to solve current energy and environmental issues represents one of the major challenges of our modern societies.
Thus, metal oxide semiconductor heterogeneous photocatalysis under solar irradiation is considered as one of the most promising pathways for H2 production, CO2 conversion and water depollution.
The limitation of charge recombination phenomena to achieve high photocatalytic yields remains a challenge.
The objective of this PhD project is to implement a radically new synthetic route, based on an opto-fluidic laser co-catalyst deposition method on faceted metal oxide nanoparticles. This will make possible to control the co-catalyst growth at the nanoscale and will produce heteronanophotocatalysts with adjustable asymmetry for the generation of oxygen and hydrogen by direct photolysis of water.
Your main mission is to combine inorganic chemistry, material science, photophysical processes and photocatalysis in order to validate your PhD in Chemistry, Physico-Chemistry of Condensed Matter.
A first step will be to synthesize sub-micrometric particles with well-controlled exposed facets of ternary semiconductor oxides using soft chemistry pathways.
As such:
· Synthesis of faceted nanoparticles
· Laser photodeposition of co-catalysts on faceted nanoparticles
· Structural, textural and morphological characterizations of the obtained nanoobjects
The characterization of electronic processes involved in these functional nanoobjects
The photocatalytic efficiency of the most promising heteronanostructures will finally be tested and optimized for the production of hydrogen and/or oxygen under solar irradiation as part of a collaboration with the University of Strasbourg.
Why join us? This interdisciplinary thesis project, at the interface of chemistry of materials/ photophysics, will be carried out in close collaboration between the ISM team expert in the synthesis and characterization of faceted particles using soft chemistry pathways (sol-gel, hydro/solvothermal) and the LOMA team expert in laser deposition methods.
This original approach and its versatility will make it possible to synthesize a library of heteronanostructures with different interfacial configurations and reactivities. This library will be used to improve the understanding of water photolysis by answering two crucial questions:
- which factor is predominant in the efficiency of a photocatalyst? The presence of multi-dots or the regioselective mono-dot deposition of co-catalysts, of the same overall volume, leading to significant asymmetry and strong electric fields to separate the charge carriers (Figure 1)?
- What is the importance of the size of the co-catalyst nanodeposits in this process?
Vos atouts / Vos talents
Holder of a Master Degree in Chemistry, Physics-Chemistry or Material Sciences, ideally, you have completed a 6-month internship on the characterization of materials and/or synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles of controlled size and shape.
· Curious, open-minded and capable of original initiatives
· You know how to use electron microscopes (SEM and TEM), spectroscopes photoelectrons, UV-visible, Raman)
· Knowledge of sol-gel and colloidal chemistry, nanomaterials, powder X-ray diffraction
· Complementray skills in heterogeneous photocatalysis would be an added value
· You aim to work on a multidisciplinary project
· You have autonomy skills in your activities and in sharing your results

By joining this project team you will work within the ISM in the Molecular Chemistry & Materials (C2M) group, bringing together a community of chemists and physicochemicals developing molecular systems or functional nanoobjects, and, on the other hand, at the Laboratoire Ondes et Matière d'Aquitaine of the University of Bordeaux (LOMA) specializing in light-matter interactions, in particular laser photodeposition methods and studies of photophysical processes.
Based in Talence – access by tramway line B (stop « Peixotto ») buses, bike.
The laboratory is near the city-centre of Bordeaux and about 60 Km of the Atlantic coast.
36-month fixed-term contract
Salary gross: 2100€ per month
NB: the position is based in a laboratory in the Restrictive Zone, which requires an investigation prior to hiring, which can take up to 8 weeks.
