Missions

Modélisation et prévision de la glace de mer, de l'océan et de l'atmosphère, en tirant parti des approches d'Intelligence Artificielle et de Machine Learning.

Le Scale-Aware Sea Ice Project (SASIP, 2021-2027, Lead PI : Pierre Rampal) est un projet de recherche soutenu par la fondation Schmidt Futures, et qui vise à développer un modèle de glace de mer de nouvelle génération (neXtSIM-DG) pour être utilisé dans les futurs modèles climatiques. Il implique 11 partenaires de 5 pays différents (France, États-Unis, Norvège, Italie et Royaume-Uni).

Le projet vise à évaluer l'impact de la dynamique de la glace de mer dans la banquise et dans les zones de glace marginale sur le mélange océanique supérieur et sur le climat polaire à grande échelle (i) en utilisant une approche innovante de modélisation de la dynamique de la glace de mer à l'échelle du floe jusqu'à l'échelle du bassin, et (ii) en explorant le potentiel des méthodes d'intelligence artificielle/apprentissage profond dans ce contexte. Activités

- Modélisation/prédiction de l'état de la glace de mer dans les régions polaires grâce à l'utilisation de techniques d'IA/ML. Le système couplé glace de mer-océan ou glace de mer-atmosphère pourra également être pris en compte. L'objectif est de travailler à l'application des approches IA/ML dans le contexte de la simulation et de la prévision du système climatique couplé.
- Évaluer la cohérence physique et la précision d'un émulateur de glace de mer récemment développé dans le cadre du projet SASIP.
Sa pertinence dans un contexte de prévision court-terme de la glace de mer et de sa prévision saisonnière devront être évalués. Le développement éventuel de cet émulateur devra également être entrepris.

Compétences

- Doctorat en informatique, en mathématiques appliquées ou en océanographie. Le parcours de recherche doit démontrer une compétence - ou au moins un intérêt clair et fort - dans l'intelligence artificielle et l'apprentissage automatique appliqués au domaine des sciences de l'environnement.
- Savoir exécuter des codes numériques classiques sur des machines HPC, et avoir déjà une expérience des techniques d'intelligence artificielle et de l'utilisation d'algorithmes d'apprentissage.
- Expérience en programmation (des connaissances en C++ ou en programmation orientée objet seraient un plus).
- Anglais niveau C1
- Curiosité, autonomie et initiative.

Contexte de travail

L'Institut des Géosciences de l'Environnement (IGE, est un établissement public de recherche français sous tutelle du CNRS Terre & Univers, de l'IRD, de l'Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), de Grenoble-INP et de l'INRAE. Il rassemble environ 330 personnes dont 190 membres permanents (chercheurs, professeurs associés et titulaires, ingénieurs de recherche), et environ 140 doctorants, chercheurs post-doctorants et personnels en CDD. L'Institut accueille également chaque année plusieurs dizaines de stagiaires et de visiteurs scientifiques. L'Institut est installé sur trois sites du Campus universitaire de Grenoble (sites Molière, OSUG-B, et Maison Climat Planète). L'IGE est l'un des principaux laboratoires de l'Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Grenoble (OSUG) qui est une structure fédérative de l'Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers (INSU) du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)

La personne recrutée travaillera au sein de l'équipe de recherche Multi-scalE Ocean Modeling (MEOM, http:// de l'Institut des Géosciences de l'Environnement (IGE) dans le cadre du projet international SASIP, et sous la direction de Pierre Rampal et Julien Le Sommer.
