about the role

Your role is to carry out a thesis work on “Control plane and routing in quantum telecommunications networks by entanglement”. More precisely, the thesis focuses on the development of a control plane for quantum communications networks by entanglement, thus aiming to increase the size of these networks. Currently, research in this area is booming, as evidenced by the numerous publications of D. Towsley's group. This research topic is still at a very preliminary stage and is not yet ready for operational implementation by operators. However, experiments have been carried out over relatively short distances, for example with the participation of Orange in the France QCI network. Many studies are also being carried out in the United States and China, where the transmission of qubits over several thousand kilometers is being explored, although this requires extensive verification. This research has given rise to an abundant specialized literature. At the same time, we are observing the emergence of start-ups specializing in networks and quantum computing, in addition to major players such as IBM, Google, and other major players in the sector.

The objective of the thesis is to study the performance of quantum networks by entanglement and develop a control plane for these networks (including routing and distribution of information between quantum switches/repeaters). The thesis will focus on understanding the physical limitations of quantum networks. In particular, it will be necessary to analyze physical limitations such as decoherence, qubit storage capacity, measurement of Bell states, fidelity and purification and then evaluate the impact of these limitations on the control plan, taking into account constraints such as small storage memories and the limited lifetime of qubits. The thesis will then consist of developing algorithms for the propagation of qubits. This will notably involve designing algorithms suitable for the propagation of qubits by integrating their physical constraints. This work should lead to the creation of a large-scale quantum network simulator capable of reproducing complex environments, in particular physical constraints.

additional information

Quantum networks have appeared very recently and are at the heart of booming research activity. They are at the confluence of networks and one of the most surprising branches of physics, namely quantum mechanics. In particular, quantum networks rely on the strangest phenomenon in quantum physics, namely quantum entanglement. Apart from the application of these captivating concepts to the field of networks, the thesis subject is part of an abundant and very competitive research activity carried out by the largest laboratories in the world. The alliance of network knowledge, and as such Orange is a very favorable environment, and physics should make it possible to lay the foundations for the design of large-scale quantum networks. This ambition is also at the confluence of several fields, in particular security (Quantum Key Distribution) and quantum computing. The thesis is part of a stimulating and very promising framework for the networks of the future.
