Context:

The Morphosense Monitoring System and the Digital Twin are two between many products solution developed by SERCEL.

The first one mainly used for Structural Health Monitoring purposes where data processing toolbox allows the estimation of several dynamic, static or IA indicators.


The Digital Twin solution, is a virtual replica of the structure that aims to support decision-making for maintenance operations, prevent costly failures, provide design feedback and more.

The solution merges real time measurements of structural behavior (physical process) and numerical simulation (virtual process) in order to provide additional information (virtual sensors) as stresses, capacity utilization, remaining lifetime and more.

One of the main parts on a Digital Twin is the virtual model, here a detailed finite element model.

As the structural geometry or phenomenological process becomes complex, the size of the system (number of nodes), the loads modelling, and the number of solutions (number of time steps) increases and makes its fast solution difficult.

Therefore during system operation, the simulation characteristic time is not more compatible with the process characteristic time (data collection). Here is when Model Order Reduction techniques becomes essential.


A calibration stage is mandatory along the construction of the Digital Twin, where measure and simulation convergence indicator determined the state and accuracy between the physical and virtual model.

This calibration requires the identification of the driving parameters of the system (boundary conditions, loads ) and their value ranges beforehand.

Once in the operational stage, Optimization Procedures are used along with the Reduce Order Model for damage identification. Inside the Digital Twin solution, two optimization methods are already implemented.

Internship description:


As part of the development of our Digital Twin solution, you will work on the characterization of the implemented optimization methods using a simple supported beam experimental set-up.

You will be in charge of the finite element modelling using Ansys software and the model calibration by means of modal frequencies of the system and the estimation of driving parameters (in this case boundary conditions) using current optimization methods.

In a second time, you are going to try to establish the relationship between the number of modal frequencies required for an accurate parameter estimation.

A propagation uncertainty analysis is going to be done for to quantify the stress uncertainties from harmonic analysis. Proposition of new optimization algorithms could be a plus.

Profile:

  • You are enrolled in a Bachelor/Master's program in Mechanical Engineering, Applied mathematics, Computer Science, or comparable
  • You have basic knowledge of finite element method.
  • You are familiar with the concepts: Design of Experiments, Optimization, and Model Calibration
  • Programming knowledge in Python is a plus.
  • Fluent English language skills
  • Analytical and synthesis skills
  • A handson mentality, an open mind, excellent problemsolving, communication and innovation skills
