Finally, drawing on its experience in the Oil & Gas sector, Vallourec is preparing for the future by currently developing a comprehensive portfolio of products and solutions that meet the needs of energy transition: carbon capture, hydrogen storage, geothermal energy.
This context makes the environment particularly dynamic and international.
Context (team, technical environment) :
As part of an exciting journey to pivot Vallourec’s business towards the Energy Transition, the ETO initiative started 2-3 years ago. This ambition and roadmap are now handled by Vallourec® New Energies organization. Initially launched at the end of 2019, this organization looking after growth opportunities in the fields of geothermal energy, CCUS, hydrogen is being strengthened, with ongoing strategic review and reinforced ambition.
The roadmap for Vallourec® New Energies includes development of sales of current ‘core products’ (pipes, connections and associated services) but the ambition is much broader, using all our strengths (pipe making but also international footprint, customers’ proximity, applications know-how, etc.) to grow out of the core, expanding product offering and capabilities (e.g. from pipes to integrated systems).
Especially, the development of our solutions for hydrogen storage is a key pilar of this development. It is being structured in an internal start-up, with clear roadmap, milestones and resources. To be part of this newly developed initiative, we are looking for a Hydrogen Systems engineer.
Current team: you will be part of a dynamic and agile internal start-up, with high visibility and ambition for the future of the company, gathering people with varied backgrounds, benefitting from resources and support from the whole organization. The ambitious roadmap needs to be implemented and delivered rapidly, to secure Vallourec’s share in a fast growing market.
You will bring a new competence into the company and support the expansion of its core business.
Fundamental missions:
Your role will be instrumental in moving our offer from “pipes” to “integrated systems” (namely hydrogen storage systems, of various sorts). Among others, Vallourec is developing a solution for vertical storage of hydrogen, in our tubes, which we want to bring to our customers as a full system, customized on their specific needs.
Therefore, your role will be to:
- Design bespoke hydrogen solutions based on customer storage needs, adapting the technological modules into the right systems for the customer, including but not limited to the process definition of operational sequences (loading/stationary/unloading), the associated safety features of the plant, as well as tailoring the overall Process, Instrumentation and Control strategy of the plant;
- Bring your expertise in specifying and sourcing key outsourced components which Vallourec does not produce (e.g. interconnection tubings, valves, temperature and pressure transmitters, safety valves, etc.) and that fits with pressurized hydrogen processing;
- Contributing to the development and launch phase, e.g. playing a key role in the industrialization phase of our solution in terms of design (process, instrumentation, control, safety) and project execution (datasheets developments, sourcing, suppliers’ offers technical comparisons, vendors’ follow-up), based on our demonstration plant’s returns on experience..
- Analyzing the main feature of the solution and proposing improvements, e.g. for better cost effectiveness and/or enhanced safety, reduced footprint, etc.
In this position, you will be supported by the technical developers of our solutions and by our R&D teams in France. You will participate in exchanges with customers, to understand their needs, value drivers and technical constraints, and optimize our solution, as well as suppliers of critical components.
Team coordination: none directly but many transversal links (technical developers, R&D, regional business developers…)
Financial dimension of the position: Ability to assess cost of our systems (and competitors’ offering) and optimize cost positioning.
Major difficulties related to the position :
New business for Vallourec, where we need to build our value proposition and bring our offer to customers, creating the market for our innovative solutions. You participate in the evolution of our business (from pipes to systems): innovative mindset and focus on execution at speed will be key.
Requirements:
- Necessary : Experience of system engineering/technical coordination in the context of gas / fluid management and/or pressure vessels in industrial context (hydrogen, oil and gas, technical gases, chemical industry…), e.g., process simulation, PFD/PID, instrumentation, technical project coordination.
- Wished: Prior experience in energy transition and/or hydrogen business is a plus.
