Role Overview
We’re building the “Datadog” of LLM observability, empowering teams to build useful AI applications through tracing, evaluation, and prompt management. Our SDKs are downloaded over 26M times per month; as an SDK engineer you’ll shape the first developer experience and accelerate adoption across 40+ AI frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Own the SDKs: maintain Python and TypeScript SDKs built on OpenTelemetry. Ensure reliability, performance, minimal CPU/memory impact, error handling, batching, async flushing, and graceful degradation. SDKs run in servers, serverless, and long‑running contexts.
Design high‑quality APIs: decide naming, parameter structure, breaking‑change communication, and documentation. Lead major rewrites (Python SDK v3, TypeScript SDK v4) and add features during takes.
Integrate with AI frameworks: maintain and expand 40+ integrations (OpenAI SDK, Vercel AI, LangChain, LlamaIndex, etc.). Add new integrations as the ecosystem grows.
Support the OTLP ingestion endpoint for direct trace submission, documenting the path and expanding language support (Java, Go, etc.). Work with the OpenTelemetry community on GenAI conventions.
Write public documentation: own SDK docs, integration guides, and migration paths. Every new version ships with updated docs.
Qualifications
- Strong engineering background with focus on developer experience, API design, and reliable production code.
- Experience building or maintaining SDKs or client libraries in Python and/or TypeScript.
- Deep performance understanding: profiling, benchmarking, CPU/memory optimization.
- Self‑managed project ownership: set direction, build conviction, ship.
- Thoughtful versioning, backward compatibility, and migration support.
- Interest in open‑source software and engaging developers about integration challenges.
- Thrives in a small, accountable team with visible impact.
- CS or quantitative degree preferred.
Bonus Points
- Experience with OpenTelemetry internals or observability instrumentation.
- Founder or early‑startup experience.
- Contributions to popular open‑source SDKs or developer tools.
- ML/AI background or familiarity with LLM framework ecosystem.
