In the context of wide screening programs, the use of automated tools to allow radiologists to read medical images faster will become more and more mandatory.

Median Technologies has been working for years on AI applied to medical imaging. In particular, our Lung Cancer Screening product aims to help clinicians to spot early lesions in the lung that can possibly constitute earlystage cancers based on CT scans.

This product actually involves a lot of different models, including a lung segmentation model.
Even though lung segmentation may appear to be a non-challenging task as lungs are easily recognizable in CT scans - they are big areas filled with air - there are actually many misleading cases that can result in non-optimal segmentation masks: proximity of a gastric bubble below the
lung, patient breathing during the CT scan acquisition, big lung lesions, presence of pleural effusion, etc. These abnormalities generally lead to masks with unlikely shapes.
The goal of this internship is to develop and test methods to enforce constraints on lung masks so that the output of lung segmentation models is less unlikely in the aforementioned difficult cases.
Our interest is in particular focused on methods based on generative models.

**Assignments**
Your internship will consist in achieving the following tasks:
**1. Bibliography**
You will first write a short bibliography on research works introducing generative models to incorporate shape priors to segmentation models, in a general context and in the particular context of medical imaging.

**2. Model Design and Implementation**
You will then design and implement a model to incorporate shape priors to lung segmentation.

You will use Git to share your work with the team.

**3. Model Test and Reporting**
Your final goal will be to test your model on in-house data, and write a detailed report on how your generative model actually improves lung segmentation in difficult cases.

**Skills and Knowledge**

You are expected to have experience with the following libraries/technologies:

- At least one Deep Learning framework based on Python (preferably PyTorch)
- Git
- Pandas
- NumPy

You are also expected to be comfortable with reading scientific papers. Having already published one of several papers would be appreciated. You are expected to be comfortable with the following concepts:

- Deep Learning
- Linear Algebra
- Statistics and Probabilities
- Multivariate Calculus
- Gradient Descent and its variants

Experience with 3D medical image processing and/or image segmentation would be appreciated.

**Your Profile**

**Education**: in the process of obtaining a Master’s Degree or an Engineer Degree in any field related to Deep Learning

**Qualities**:

- Good communication in English, spoken and written. French would be a plus.
- Curiosity, open-mindedness, determination and persistence, patience
