**Mission**:
Overview and Work Plan. The thesis project has two main goals centred on the theoretical study of the gas within galaxy protoclusters with the aim of generating predictions that can be tested observationally (A and B) on the one hand, and the data analysis and interpretation of high-redshift galaxy protoclusters observations with JWST and Euclid and prepare mm observations (C) on the other hand.
A- Origin and fate of the gas in galaxy protoclusters
- From a theoretical point of view, assess the origin, evolution and fate of the gas in galaxy protoclusters
- Perform observational predictions for redshifts around Cosmic Noon, e.g. for CO or Ly-alpha lines
- Compare with observations in hand and the literature
- Extend predictions at redshifts closer to Cosmic Dawn
B- Predictions for SZ signal in protoclusters
- Model the gas properties (temperature, density) in protoclusters
- Obtain SZ signal predictions using relevant parameters, like redshift, halo mass
- Compare with available datasets
C- JWST & JWST data analysis and millimeter obs preparation / predictions
- Analyze JWST/NIRCam and Euclid VIS+NIR data to extract: photometric redshifts, stellar masses, SFR, morphologies (incl for JWST: multiband photometry and SED fitting) and characterize existing protocluster properties
- Search for new protoclusters and their characterization
- Derive predictions for the detectability of protoclusters with SZ observations like NIKA2
Goals and Timeline. With the goal to efficiently predict observables and to extract meaningful physical information on data, the work timeline can be summarized as:
Q4 2024 + S1 2025: set-up the theoretical framework for studying the origin and fate of the gas feeding protoclusters; Gather literature data; Start the use of JWST and Euclid data;
S2 2025: Finalize the first approach for gas description; Start modelling the SZ predictions
S1 2026: First publication on gas fate in protoclusters; SZ model prediction progress; Analysis of JWST & Euclid data;
S2 2026: publication on gas fate, SZ predictions. NIRCam publication;
S1 2027: Finalization of theoretical aspects; Finalization of Euclid analysis; Start Thesis writing;
S2 2027: Finish projects; Paper and Thesis writing; PhD defence in September 2027.
Methods and Expected Results. Methodology involves analytical modelling, python programming to code models and compare with literature (other models and data). Another part involves multiband photometry SED fitting, statistical analysis, comparison w/ models and simulations. Expected results deal with prediction and interpretation for the gas content in protoclusters, and also galaxies physical parameters, in the cosmological context of large scale structure formation and evolution. Publications, internal reports, talks at conferences are expected.
Team. The thesis will be co-supervised by Pr Hervé Dole and Pr Mathieu Langer. The PhD student will join the Cosmology team of IAS in Orsay. Our group has a leading role in Euclid (in particular SGS-OU-MER and SWGs), and is involved in JWST. Our group has an internationally recognized expertise on infrared galaxies, SZ galaxy clusters, protoclusters, cosmological parameters, theoretical and simulation aspects. International collaborations within Euclid and JWST will ensure a nice insersion in the international community.

**Profil**:
Required: a Master’s degree in astrophysics or physics, or engineering school. Be fluent with theoretical concepts, cosmology calculations, python, statistics, digital tools (wikis, git, latex, videoconferencing etc). Background in cosmology and galaxy evolution. Autonomy. Ability to deliver synthetic and frequent reporting and documentation (writing or talks), work in an international team, English (at least B2). Welcomed: experience in modelling or galaxy physical parameters estimates (stellar mass, star formation rate, etc.), in data & statistical analysis, in visible, infrared or millimeter data analysis (ground based and/or space telescopes).
