**Description du sujet**:
The interactions between organic matter and minerals are very well integrated into the toolbox of living organisms to shape and design shells, skeletons and a variety of other tools essential to their lives (teeth, spikes...). The growth of these mineral structures is oriented and their shape obtained by the combined action of organic growth inhibitors and molecules that catalyze/accelerate cementation. In the same way, mankind uses organic-mineral interactions to shape and improve the functionalities of numerous materials. Perhaps the most emblematic example is concrete, the material of choice for the infrastructures that form the backbone of our modern civilization, and therefore the most widely used material in the world. For this material, which combines a mineral adhesive (cement) and a filler (usually aggregates), a wide range of organic molecules have been developed to control the cement reactivity, known as setting retarders and accelerators. These molecules accelerate or retard cement hydration which combines the dissolution of cement grains and precipitation of nano-hydrates underlying cement setting. However, the mechanisms responsible for this change in reactivity remain poorly understood. In the current context of climate change, it is urgent to replace ordinary Portland cement with environmental friendly cements that have a reduced clinker content Setting accelerators and early strength enhancer could play a major role in compensating for their inherent lower reactivity and slower strength development at early age. Optimizing the choice and use of these molecules requires a better understanding of their mode of action. This project focuses on a specific use of molecules known as alkanolamines, which are also traditionally used as grinding aides but were demonstrated to have a good impact on the strength development.

The aim of this thesis project is to advance our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying the mode of action of setting accelerators and strength enhancers. The work will involve a combination of original experimental approaches and thermodynamic modelling for:

- Determination of aqueous complex formation in the presence of alkanolamines;
- Characterization of the dissolution rate of pure cementitious phases and precipitation rate of hydrates in the presence of alkanolamines;
- Deciphering early age reactivity of cement blends and activation of aluminum and iron rich cementitious phases with alkanolamines using experimental model systems.
