- One of the main challenges of magnetic confinement fusion is the management of power fluxes at the machine wall. In next-generation experimental machines, heat fluxes to solid surfaces in the divertor will exceed by far the technologically acceptable limit of 10 MW/m2 if no action is taken to mitigate them. The strategy envisaged to cope with these conditions is based on the dissipation of the power flow carried by the plasma by taking advantage of the interaction of the plasma with neutral particles (naturally present in the vicinity of the plasma-wall interaction surface) or impurities. The ultimate goal is to operate the plasma in a so-called detached regime in which most of the energy from the plasma center is converted into radiation before reaching solid surfaces.- Current knowledge shows that obtaining the detached regime is highly dependent on the mechanisms of plasma transport in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. We also know that turbulence plays an important, if not predominant, role in these mechanisms. Conversely, experimental results on several tokamaks show a strong impact of detachment on turbulent transport in the edge plasma. This phenomenology is highly nonlinear and can only be approached quantitatively on the basis of numerical simulations modeling all of these phenomena. However, due to the complexity of the problem and the computational means then available, the numerical modeling of turbulence and that of the plasma-neutral interaction have historically been 2 disjoint domains with, on the one hand, numerical models including the physics of the plasma-neutral interaction but dealing with the perpendicular transport in an ad-hoc way and, on the other hand, turbulence codes not integrating the plasma-neutral interaction. However, significant progress has been made in recent years with the development of numerical tools capable of consistently dealing with these 2 aspects of edge plasma physics.- This internship proposal aims to exploit one of these advanced numerical tools to establish an analysis of the mutual interaction between turbulence and neutral particles in the edge plasma. It is based on the SOLEDGE3X-EIRENE code, jointly developed between IRFM and the University of Aix-Marseille. Drawing on an existing database of numerical simulations, the student will establish an analysis of the non-linear effects of turbulent fluctuations on the neutrals dynamics and on the related source terms for the plasma. Depending on the initial results, the student may also need to complete the existing database with new simulations.**Moyens / Méthodes / Logiciels**:
