**PhD - Characterization of the Sliding Electrical Contact for a Railway Application**
**Description of the Test Bench**
**Scientific Objectives**
The objective of this research project, Sliding Contact Investigation for Carbon pantograph wear Evaluation (SLICE), is to test various materials and usage profiles while implementing specific and finely tuned measurements, such as:
- Monitoring crucial parameters, including current, contact force, disk rotation speed, and pin scanning speed, as well as pin temperatures.
- Developing an optical method for characterizing pin wear during testing.
- 3D roughness measurement for the pin's surface state.
- A precise characterization of the contact surface via optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy).
The test bench is continually evolving, and an innovative method for detecting electrical arcs that cause wear will need to be developed. Initial tests have demonstrated that sliding speed, current, and contact force are the most influential factors on the observed wear rate. Unfortunately, no clear behavioral law has been identified, and the results exhibit excessive variability, particularly depending on the material used, rendering them incomplete. Ultimately, the SLICE project should enable the establishment of behavioral and wear laws and distinguish the performance of different carbon-based materials. The ambition of the SLICE project is to provide a concrete response to an industrial problem (the wear of current collection strips in the railway sector) following an exhaustive analysis of the underlying physical phenomenon, namely, the sliding electrical contact.
The SLICE project perfectly aligns with the Energy and Applied Mechanics (DMA) department's project at the Femto-ST Institute. Within the Energy department, this involves the SYS axis of the SHARPAC team and the MACS axis of the THERMIE team. For the DMA, the ECTO team will be consulted for its expertise in tribology. Ultimately, the three teams involved are:
- SYS / Control, Energy Management, and Design of Electric Systems
- MACS / Thermal Machines and Systems
- ECTO / Mechanochemistry and Tribology

**Required Experience**:
- Master's degree in Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Practical experience in characterizing electrical contacts or related fields
- Strong skills in data analysis and experimental result interpretation
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
**Desirable Experience**:
- Experience in numerical modeling or simulation of electrical contacts

Pay: 2,000.00€ - 2,200.00€ per month
