**Scientific context**:
Recently, discoveries in the natural world have sparked great interest in the use of bio-inspired topographies, to create multi-scale functional surfaces (example of the lotus leaf). **Femtosecond laser** texturing stands out as an advanced surface treatment technique that addresses this requirement. By utilizing ultrashort laser pulses, it modifies the surface topography, achieving simultaneously both micro and nanoscales with precise control.
**Question asked and objective**:
The generated** multiscale textures** present a potential fragility, which the scientific community has not yet addressed. The problem of the **wear** of these surfaces, and its potential **functional implications**, requires further study.
The objective of the thesis is to study the **wear behavior of textured titanium alloy surfaces**, then to evaluate its impact on functionality (wettability and cellular/bacterial adhesion).
The doctoral student will study the **correlations between wear and loss of functionality**, using advanced analysis of surface properties (multi-scale topographic analyses, nano-hardness).
**The thesis will be structured around 4 work packages**:
WP 1: Surface texturing by femtosecond laser and surface characterization
WP 2: Evaluations of wear of textured surfaces
WP 3: Evaluation of the loss of functionalities (wettability, biological performance)
WP 4: Process/surface properties/wear/functionality correlations

- Laboratoire de Tribologie et Dynamique des systèmesThe PhD student will work in a **multidisciplinary environment**, interacting with the Laboratory of Tribology and Systems Dynamics (LTDS) (Laser texturation, surface characterization) and SAINBIOSE Laboratory (cellular biology). The PhD student will be located on Saint-Etienne campus of LTDS/ECL/ENISE with current missions on Lyon campus.
