Organisation/Company CNRS Department Laboratoire d'astrophysique de Bordeaux Research Field Environmental science Environmental science » Earth science Environmental science » Global change Researcher Profile Recognised Researcher (R2) Application Deadline 4 Feb 2026 - 23:59 (UTC) Country France Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Hours Per Week 35 Offer Starting Date 23 Feb 2026 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Horizon Europe Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No Offer Description The successful candidate will be required to provide expert knowledge on computational astronomy applied to radio-interferometry, operating across several of the work packages of the ODISSEE project ((Online Data Intensive Solutions for Science in the Exabytes Era). ODISSEE is a major European initiative federating the efforts of 3 pan-European ESFRI infrastructures in the physical sciences, Big Data and, more generally, the digital continuum (HL-LHC, SKAO and SLICES-RI). ODISSEE will provide evolutionary and revolutionary hardware and software platforms to meet the digital challenges of these major infrastructures in a highly competitive international context. The project aims to prototype energy efficient solutions that will enable the HL-LHC and SKA to reliably process and analyze the huge volumes of raw data they produce, in collaboration with industrial partners, and through access to the unique experimental facilities of SLICES-RI. The project is deeply embedded in regional and international Research & Innovation ecosystems, with close links to several major European initiatives and partnerships with leading technology providers. A strong and lasting impact is built-in through a two-tier exploitation strategy, including the development of a unique training approach for HL-LHC and SKAO staff focusing on the use of large scale cyber-infrastructures, supported by SLICES-RI, as well as enhanced interactions with the relevant ecosystems (user communities and digital technology experts). Responsibilities Contribute to the definition of data processing workflows, and associated reference implementations, required to meet the specifications of science programs in radio-astronomy During an initial phase of specifications, contribute to gathering details on reference implementations (source codes & documentation) for the targeted use cases as well as a corpus of existing simulated and real data to be used for validation purposes based on open-data Work on a composable architecture able of high-bandwidth I/O, large storage capabilities, AI and data processing, as well as software to implement radio-astronomy workflows, including resource management and a workflow deployment API Contribute to the implementation of modular demonstrators, to be optimized and evaluated on flexibility, sustainability and efficiency for the corresponding use-cases, including the use of new and emerging specialized AI-focussed accelerators for radio astronomy Explore compression opportunities within the radio-astronomy workflows potentially leveraging DNN methodologies. These compression schemes will be evaluated in terms of (i) trade-off between energy efficiency during the training process and (ii) science yield (sensitivity / resolution) during inference. A key aspect is to benefit from hybrid HPC + AI approaches within the workflows, to maximize science return while constraining resources usage Support the structuring and drafting of relevant reports and deliverables Engage with external and internal stakeholders at different levels Candidate Profile The successful candidate (M/F) will join the Bordeaux Astrophysics Laboratory (LAB - UMR 5804), whose mission is to conduct research in the field of space sciences, build associated instrumentation, train students in/for research, and disseminate knowledge. Located on the Pessac campus, it is a major player in astrophysical research, recognized for its scientific excellence and cutting-edge technological environment. It currently has 74 researchers, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. For all tasks related to the ODISSEE project, he or she will report to the scientific director of the project and will work in a transnational strategic project in Europe with the aim to maintain a strong and lasting cooperation between the partners across spectrum of their activities. As an interface between academic and industry partners, he or she will make an important contribution to the success of this major European initiative. Recruitment will be for an initial period of 12 months, renewable up to a total duration of 36 months. Qualifications PhD in astronomy, computer science or related fields Proficiency with several of the following languages / programming models: C/C++, Python, CUDA, OpenMP, MPI, PyTorch, TensorRT Strong organisational, time management, and verbal and written communication skills Ability to work both individually and in close collaboration with multicultural teams at varying levels of organizations Ability to multitask, prioritise work, and handle demanding timeframes.
