Role Summary We are looking for a Compliance Lawyer to strengthen our Legal team and lead the development and implementation of a robust compliance program, reporting to our corporate lead counsel. This role will ensure Mistral AI adheres to anti-corruption laws, economic sanctions rules, and export control regulations, while aligning with our rapid growth and international ambitions. As part of this role you will advise the group (working hand-in-hand with other members of the MistralI legal team) on pragmatic and actionable compliance solutions, and lead their implementation, execution and adaptation, while continuously providing legal and regulatory monitoring on compliance developments (including anti-corruption, sanctions, export control), benchmarking industry best practices and proposing improvements. Key responsibilities Anti-Corruption Compliance Design, implement, and oversee Mistral AI’s anti-corruption compliance program, in collaboration with cross-functional and cross-boundary teams (including Internal Control) Develop and maintain a risk mapping framework to identify corruption risks specific to our business (e.g., relationships with suppliers, partners, and international clients) Adapt and disseminate the anti-corruption code of conduct, along with related policies (gifts, hospitality, conflicts of interest, etc.) Organize training and awareness programs for employees and key stakeholders (Executive Team, Business Development, Procurement, etc.) Coordinate internal and external audits to assess the effectiveness of the compliance program and recommend corrective actions Sanctions, Export Control Compliance, Customs Assess Mistral AI’s exposure to economic sanctions and export control risks (dual-use goods, sanctioned countries, designated persons) Establish and enforce due diligence procedures for third parties (clients, suppliers, partners), in collaboration with Business and Procurement teams Monitor regulatory developments in sanctions regimes (EU, UN, OFAC, etc.) and adapt internal processes accordingly Establish customs’ regime mapping and improve practices as needed Work with technical teams to integrate compliance requirements into product development (e.g., geographic restrictions, user verification) Governance and Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate with Legal, Internal Control, HR, and leadership to foster a culture of compliance Help prepare and lead interactions between Mistral AI and regulatory authorities (e.g. anti corruption) or external partners (law firms, auditors), including audit and inspection requests Contribute to audit reports and action plans to address any compliance gaps Qualifications And Skills Legal Master degree (Master’s in Business Law, Corporate Law, Compliance, or equivalent). Compliance certifications are also an asset A minimum of 6 years of relevant legal experience, including in-house experience in the technology space Minimum 6 years of experience in compliance, ideally in a law firm, multinational company, or regulatory authority Proven expertise in: Sapin II Law and anti-corruption compliance programs Economic sanctions and export control regulations (EU, OFAC, etc.) Risk mapping and third-party due diligence Experience in the technology or AI sector is a plus (understanding of data, semiconductors, or dual-use goods), as well as knowledge and understanding of artificial intelligence Analytical and problem solving skills: Candidates should be able to analyze complex topics and have strong problem-solving skills, and be able to dig into internal systems Pedagogy: Excellent written and verbal communication; strong ability to communicate legal advice to clients and colleagues, and presenting complex legal concepts in a clear and understandable manner International mindset: International experience is a plus Adaptability: Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI technologies and compute topics, and the legal landscape surrounding them, candidates should be adaptable and willing to continuously learn and update their skills and knowledge.
