Job Title: Chief Economist & Head of Research Reports to: Group Executive CIB Location: Lomé (Togo), Paris (France) or London (UK) Direct Reports: TBC Job Purpose The Chief Economist & Head of Research will serve as the Bank’s primary economic ambassador to global investors, policymakers, sovereign issuers, and market stakeholders. The role is responsible for positioning Ecobank CIB as a leading voice on African macroeconomic intelligence to support capital markets business growth, especially in the areas of sovereign debt issuance, investor relations, ratings advisory, and market access. The core mandate of the role is to translate African macroeconomic trends into actionable capital markets insights that help Ecobank win mandates, mobilize capital, and deepen client relationships across the public and private sector. The Chief Economist & Head of Research will also interact with the Bank’s senior management team to provide meaningful, independent, data-driven economic analyses to help inform and support decision making. The Chief Economist & Head of Research will lead the Bank’s economic research agenda, deliver thought leadership to investors, engage ministries of finance and debt management offices, and partner with syndication, DCM, and sales teams to unlock capital flows across the continent. Key Responsibilities Investor & Market Engagement Act as the Bank’s lead voice on African macroeconomic developments to the global investment community. Lead investor education and engagement through regular economic updates, webinars, white papers, thematic reports, and targeted country roadshows (both physical and virtual) across key capital markets. Build and manage key relationships with institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds, portfolio managers, and ratings agencies. Participate in conferences and thought leadership platforms to position the Bank as the reference for Africa-focused economic intelligence. Conduct economic analyses to assess the Bank’s financial performance and identify areas for improvement. Provide macroeconomic advice and guidance to the Bank’s public and private sectors clients. Sovereign & Policy Advisory Serve as a strategic advisor to ministries of finance, debt management offices, and central banks on economic positioning and capital markets access. Leverage macroeconomic credibility to support the Bank’s advisory and syndication teams in pursuing sovereign and quasi-sovereign mandates. Advise sovereign clients on Eurobond issuance strategies, market timing, pricing dynamics, and investor positioning. Shape and co‑lead transactions through data‑driven perspectives that enhance issuer credibility with investors. Economic Intelligence & Research Leadership Build, lead, and mentor a high‑performing economic research team, with deep focus on African macro indicators, fiscal dynamics, and asset allocation trends. Produce and publish high-quality economic products (monthly/quarterly outlooks, country notes, sector spotlights). Develop proprietary indices and tools that support investor decision-making and differentiate the Bank’s insights. Incorporate ESG and sustainability perspectives into macroeconomic and sector analysis, ensuring alignment with investor expectations on climate risk, governance practices, and sustainable development trends. Leverage AI, digital research tools, and emerging analytics technologies to enhance efficiency of research delivery. Maintain a dynamic macroeconomic dashboard for both internal decision-making and external engagement. Strategic Internal Advisory Support the bank senior management with forward‑looking macroeconomic perspectives that inform capital allocation, sector selection, and business planning. Partner with Risks, Treasury, Syndications, Advisory, Sales, and Trading teams to refine strategy and enhance deal structuring. Brief senior leadership on global economic developments with implications for the Bank’s business and clients. Job Profile Experience & Qualifications Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Economics, Finance, Development Economics, or a related field. 12+ years’ relevant experience, including sovereign advisory, macroeconomic research, capital markets, or investor relations. Strong track record engaging with ministries of finance, multilaterals, DMOs, or rating agencies in Africa. Demonstrated ability to influence external stakeholders with data‑driven economic insights. Prior experience supporting or participating in capital markets transactions (e.g., Eurobonds, syndicated loans, ratings processes) is highly desirable. Experience managing and developing diverse teams of economists and analysts. Familiarity with African sovereign landscapes, macroeconomic fundamentals, and the broader investment ecosystem. Management experience strongly desired. Problem‑solving capabilities coupled with innovation skills and change management. Skills, Capabilities & Personal Attributes Exceptional public‑speaking and stakeholder communication skills. Deep understanding of macroeconomics, financial markets, and sovereign financing dynamics. Established credibility and presence engaging investors and media on African economic themes. Strategic thinker with problem‑solving agility and high analytical rigor. Proficiency with analytics tools and data visualization platforms. Strong intellectual leadership with the ability to represent the Bank on high‑profile platforms. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across business units and geographies. Key Success Metrics Number and quality of investor engagements hosted. Sovereign/Eurobond and private placements mandates originated or influenced. Published thought leadership outputs and media impact. Recognition as a trusted economic voice in the African financial ecosystem. Strength and relevance of internal economic insights supporting strategic decisions especially on the Banks Trading Business within the Global Markets space. Build a high‑performing research team with strong analytical capabilities and coverage across key African markets. Notes This role will involve frequent international travel.
