Magneto-Chiral Dichroism Studies on Chiral Magnetic Molecular Systems

No Offer Description The candidate will explore Magneto-Chiral Dichroism (MChD), the differential absorption of light that chiral systems exhibit when irradiated with unpolarized light in a magnetic field with a unique home-made experimental setup. The aim is to identify the parameters governing MChD (nature of the electronic transitions, coordination geometry, nature of the involved metal ions) and to develop MChD measurements in light emission. The final aim is to establish the link between MChD and the Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS effect), a chiral induced selective electron transport. The candidate will perform Magneto-Chiral Dichroism measurements as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field on chiral systems of different morphologies (single-crystals, pellets, drop-casted samples) and he/she will develop the detection of MChD through light emission in the Vis-NIR range on the Magneto-Chiral Dichroism spectrometer built at the LNCMI. In parallel, she/he will be in charge of developing Natural and Magnetic Circular Dichroism (NCD and MCD) measurements on the same samples using a newly acquired cryogenic setup. A synthetic activity towards chiral magnetic molecular systems can be performed as a secondary activity. The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses is a CNRS large scale research infrastructure allowing researchers to carry out experiments in some of the most intense magnetic fields in the world. Continuous fields up to 36 T are available on the Grenoble site. Furthermore, unique experimental home-made setups are available for advanced physical measurements under magnetic field, such as the Magneto-Chiral Dichroism spectrometer that will be used by the candidate. The candidate will work in the “molecular magnetism” research group strongly interacting with Dr. Matteo Atzori, Prof. Cyrille Train, and Dr. Geert Rikken (LNCMI-Toulouse), and will collaborate with national and international research teams in the frame of already existing collaborations. A PhD in Physical-Chemistry, in Condensed Matter Physics, in Material Science or in Chemistry. The candidate must have a strong experience in carrying physical/optical (magnetic/absorption/luminescence/dichroism) measurements and a solid scientific background. Competences in single-crystal X-ray diffraction (resolution, indexation) would be highly appreciated, as well as experience with cryogenic scientific instrumentation.
