Mechanical Engineering Intern – Design & Prototyping of an Inspection Bench At Gama, we develop deorbiting sails that help satellite operators comply with new regulations and contribute to preserving the orbital environment. These ultra-light drag sails are at the core of our solutions and complement our work on solar sails. We are a passionate, demanding, and collaborative team where everyone can have a direct impact on the technology we develop. To support our ambitions, we are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join the Structure, Mechanism & Sail team, with a focus on Sail Design & Manufacturing. Your Mission 🎯 Your main objective: develop the first prototype of a material inspection bench for our deorbiting sails The ultra-thin films used in our sails may present micro-defects that must be detected before manufacturing. Your goal will be to design, test, and iterate on a first functional version of a simple, reliable, and scalable inspection tool. A concrete, multidisciplinary project with strong impact on the final quality of the sails. You will have real ownership over your prototype, while being supported by the team. Your Responsibilities Defining the requirements and conducting a short literature review. Designing and prototyping the mechanical structure of the inspection bench. Integrating an optical module (camera + lighting). Developing initial image analysis code with a user interface. Implementing a calibration method. Exploring a simple approach to repairing detected defects. Running tests and validation of the prototype. Analyzing critical defects for manufacturing and studying various raw materials. Writing the associated technical documentation (in English). 🔧 Additionally, depending on the project’s progress, you may also: Participate in the manufacturing of sails or prototypes. Contribute to mechanical tests on our deorbiting sail. Work on continuous improvement topics with the technical team. Your Profile Final‑year engineering student (Master’s level or equivalent). Fluent in English (TOEIC appreciated) — additional languages are a plus. Knowledge and/or experience with CAD software (e.g., CATIA, 3DX, SolidWorks, NX, etc.). Curious, rigorous, analytical, and proactive, comfortable in a multidisciplinary environment. Strong interest in prototyping, testing, and handling thin materials. Enjoys diverse tasks involving analysis, design, and hands‑on work. Ability to work autonomously. What We Offer A deep dive into an innovative project with real impact on the space industry.
