Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to join our team, either in our Underwriting or R&D functions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, insurance, or climate modeling, with proficiency in statistics, probabilities, applied mathematics, and machine learning methods.

  • In the Underwriting team, you will be responsible for conducting structuring work, risk analysis, and insurance proposal for worldwide public sector and corporate clients. You will also discuss business opportunities with partners, create technical documentation, and redact insurance contracts.
  • In the R&D team, you will develop new models to improve our understanding of climate risks, conduct research on climate modeling and machine learning methods, and test state-of-the-art methods based on recent research articles.

As a Data Scientist at Descartes Underwriting, you will collaborate closely with other internal teams and external partners to deliver insurance products to a worldwide-based public sector and corporate clients.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A strong academic background in computer science, applied mathematics, climate, or meteorological studies;
  • Previous experience in data science, insurance, or climate modeling;
  • Proficiency in Python (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn) and excellent communication skills;
  • Familiarity with Cat modeling is a plus;
  • An entrepreneurial mindset, ability to work autonomously, and attention to detail;
  • Fluency in English is required, with a good command of one additional language valued.
