Overview and Role Summary

Reporting to the VP of Quality & Food Safety, Standards, and Risk Management, the primary objective is to utilize scientific, regulatory, and technical knowledge to enhance QFS governance and ensure compliance, thereby fulfilling our commitment to consumers and clients. This is accomplished through comprehensive risk identification, evaluation, and management, supported by a global Quality Management System (QMS).

Key Strategic Goals of QFS, Standards, and Risk Management include:

  • Protecting Danone's operational license and reputation through a tripartite strategy of Detect, Defend, and Drive.
  • Assembling a team of quality and food safety specialists to design and implement Danone's QMS and global policies, establishing a robust governance framework.
  • Addressing the entire value chain with risk identification, assessment, communication, mitigation, and escalation.
  • Leading in QFS, scientific, and regulatory thought leadership by developing and utilizing strong networks with external partners, institutions, and associations.
  • Facilitating the creation and delivery of QFS training and practical onsite support through Subject Matter Expert (SME) leadership, empowering the business and engaging broader technical communities.

Responsibilities of the General Population Product Categories Team within QFS, Standards, and Risk Management include:

Acting as the hub of QFS expertise for General Population product categories, establishing Standards that are appropriate and designed to safeguard consumers and Danone's reputation. We assist the business and stakeholders throughout the value chain with a risk-focused approach and enhance QFS capabilities through tools and training.

1. Core Mission

To foster innovation and growth by guaranteeing microbiological quality and food safety throughout the entire value chain for all General Population products and processes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the establishment of a QFS culture within the organization.
  • Serving as a liaison between QFS, Operations, and R&I, as well as DFSC microbiology experts to aid in risk management and due diligence.
  • Assisting in the development of QFS microbiological knowledge and competencies.
  • Mitigating QFS risks in Danone operations by ensuring the implementation of appropriate processes to prevent detrimental risks.

2. Primary Duties

  • Providing business support on microbiological Q&FS to Danone GP – Dairy, Plant-based, Waters, and Beverages – R&I, sourcing, design, manufacturing, and supply chain.
  • Offering expert input on QFS microbiological matters in GP Categories.
  • Defining, reviewing, updating, and training on QFS criteria and verification plans.
  • Managing PNC, crises, and incidents.
  • Acting as a liaison between the business and DFSC for risk assessments and scientific positions.
  • Establishing, reviewing, and updating QFS requirements for environmental monitoring plans, including training and implementation.
  • Supporting team members and QFS stakeholders across the value chain on microbiological issues (Design, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, etc.).
  • Providing microbiological expertise to QFS, Operations, and R&I teams: HCP, Risk management, troubleshooting/action plans, root cause analysis, pathogen, spoilage, and hygiene monitoring.
  • Translating microbiological risk assessments (identification & characterization) into risk management strategies.
  • Developing standards and guidelines for existing and new products based on predictive microbiology, mathematical modeling, and statistical tools.
  • Supporting the definition, review, and update of microbiological QFS criteria for raw and packaging materials.
  • Participating in and leading internal networks related to QFS in verification activities for all GP categories.
  • Driving innovation.
  • Providing microbiological QFS risk analysis and risk mitigation recommendations for innovation initiatives.
  • Assisting local project teams in addressing concerns regarding microbiological QFS risks throughout the design process.
  • Communication and Training.
  • Informing key stakeholders about the creation, review, and update of QFS standards.
  • Enhancing microbiological capabilities (competencies/expertise) by designing and delivering training modules across the organization.

3. Key Relationships

  • QFS SRM: DFSC Microbiology, FS SN Microbiologist, DFSC Chemical Safety, FSMS, FS Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, QFS Compliance, Crisis/Incidents team.
  • QFS: Regional and Global QFS, CBU & Plant QFS managers, QFS in Sourcing, QFS in Design, Analytical Excellence, QFS Regional Microbiologists.
  • Other Danone: R&I, Operations, Global Engineering, C&I GS, FS Audit.
  • EXTERNAL: Industry Associations, External laboratories, Scientific and regulatory communities (Analytical, Microbiology, etc.).

About You

1. Required Competencies

EDUCATION and PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • PhD in Microbiology or Master/Engineering Degree or equivalent.
  • 20 years of experience in a food-related industry, preferably with similar PTC to those in GP Danone, QFS in Operations with substantial experience in microbial risk management.
  • Strong foundation in applied food microbiology, bacterial physiology, pathogenic microorganisms, environmental and spoilage contaminants.
  • Experience in a food factory in a QFS role.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities.
  • Capacity to manage multiple and often unplanned tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience in a global role, across diverse cultures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of communicating and making swift decisions on sensitive matters.

TECHNICAL

  • Food Microbiology (criteria and verification plans, predictive modeling, challenge tests, thermo-resistance, fermentation).
  • Risk Analysis (HACCP, statistics, sampling plans by attributes).
  • Q&FS hazards in food and packaging (pathogens and spoilage microflora and their by-products).
  • Food Hygiene, GMP, FSSC, and related standards.
  • Q&FS processes and systems.
  • Audit skills and auditor experience.
  • Microbiological laboratory testing and methodology.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in English; additional languages are a plus (French and/or Spanish).
