Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Research Assistant to join our team as a Bioinformatics Specialist. The successful candidate will provide computational and bioinformatic support to our research branch, working closely with our scientists to analyze and interpret large datasets.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide computational support to the research branch by writing and adapting scripts and analytical packages for data manipulation and analysis.
- Assist scientists in data analysis, including developing and adapting statistical and other types of data analyses, and formatting and communicating data for inclusion in scientific presentations and publications.
- Participate in the Agency's central bioinformatics activities, ensuring that new methodologies are available across the organization and sharing expertise with other bioinformaticians.
- Interact with other groups at the Agency, providing input on high-performance computing and information technology resources, and participating in working groups and seminars.
- Interact with external collaborators on bioinformatics and data analysis knowledge, discussing issues related to large datasets and their analysis.
- Stay up-to-date with technological developments in bioinformatic resources and tools, producing regular activity reports and presenting progress and results during group and branch meetings.
Requirements
- Graduation from secondary school or equivalent, and subsequent training in bioinformatics, life sciences, computer science/programming, statistics or related field.
- At least five years' experience with high-performance computing and/or cluster management using scripting languages/programming (Python and/or R).
- Expert knowledge of English is essential, and intermediate knowledge of French is desirable.
- Knowledge of R for statistical computing and data visualization, and one or more scripting or programming languages (Perl, Python, Ruby, C++ or Java etc.), preferably using the Unix/Linux environment.
- Good general understanding of molecular and cell biology.
- Ability to design, optimize and implement bioinformatic workflows for analysis of complex data, clearly communicate results to a variety of audiences, work autonomously and prioritize work in a demanding environment, and create clear, concise figures for publications.
Desirable Qualifications
- University degree in bioinformatics, computer science/statistics or related field.
- Experience in research environment.
- Experience in other programming languages using Unix/Linux environment.
