Industrial Dip-Coating Process Study
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at the Center for Material Forming (Cemef) of Ecole des Mines de Paris – PSL University. The successful candidate will work on a PhD thesis project in partnership with Stellantis, focusing on the industrial dip-coating process study using complex shapes and non-Newtonian fluids.
Project Overview
The project aims to understand, predict, and tune final deposited thicknesses on arbitrarily complex geometries, playing on bath rheology and object removal trajectories and speeds. The candidate will use an experimental and theoretical approach to apprehend all unitary mechanisms and instabilities at play when an object is covered by yield stress fluids (the bath), and when it is simply immersed and removed from it by translation movement, with model geometries (spheres, plaques...).
Research Objectives
The PhD thesis main goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the industrial dip-coating process, including:
- Experimental device development for laboratory-scale robot arm to perform complex bath removal moves
- Layer thicknesses measurements using local laser distance sensors and on-board cameras for global kinetics, dripping, and flow characterizations
- Numerical simulation code implementation for layers flow modeling
- Extension of the approach to more complex geometries and trajectories, ideally integrating real-time computing and feedback loops
Working Environment
The project will take place in the Center for Material Forming (Cemef) of Ecole des Mines de Paris – PSL University, located on Pierre Laffitte Campus in Sophia Antipolis (France). The candidate will be part of Cemef Computing and Fluids research team and will have many stays and interactions planned with Stellantis, the project industrial partner.
Requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate with a strong background in fluid dynamics, coating process, and numerical simulation. The candidate should have excellent communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
