PhD Thesis in Industrial Dip-Coating Process Study
Context:
Dip-coating processes involve covering an object with a thin layer of liquid using sequences of immersion in a bath and removal at well-chosen speeds and trajectories. Layer thickness control depends heavily on previous steps, as well as fluid rheology, which in turn affects end-use target properties. Lost-foam casting, a foundry method used in last-generation engines made at Stellantis, includes such coating techniques.
Goals and Planning:
This PhD thesis aims to understand, predict, and tune final deposited thicknesses on arbitrarily complex geometries by playing on bath rheology and object removal trajectories and speeds. An experimental and theoretical approach will be used to apprehend all unitary mechanisms and instabilities at play when an object is covered by yield stress fluids and when it is simply immersed and removed from it by translation movement.
Methodology:
The experimental device will consist of a laboratory-scale robot arm able to perform complex bath removal moves. Layer thickness measurements will be performed using local laser distance sensors for optimal precision, as well as on-board cameras for global kinetics, dripping, and flow characterizations. Layers flow modeling will be implemented in a numerical simulation code.
Expected Outcomes:
This project will result in a deeper understanding of the dip-coating process and the development of a numerical simulation code to predict and optimize layer thicknesses on complex geometries. The candidate will be part of the Cemef Computing and Fluids research team and will have the opportunity to interact with Stellantis, the project industrial partner.
