Role Overview

Our team assists clients in navigating complex legal, regulatory, and international arbitration matters while supporting strategic decision-making and public policy discussions globally. Our ability to provide clear interpretations of intricate economic issues has established us as a leader in this domain.
FTI Consulting is seeking an Intern for its energy division based in Paris to support our expanding operations.

Responsibilities

The intern will engage with critical economic and business challenges, focusing on five key areas within the energy sector.

You will collaborate with a team of economists, former industry professionals, and regulators addressing sophisticated economic and strategic issues across four primary areas of expertise:

Strategy – We advise energy firms and governments on positioning and investing in the decarbonization of energy systems. Examples include:

  • Consulting with a Western European infrastructure firm on viable business models and necessary public financial support for renewable gas production (hydrogen or methane);
  • Advising an African government on a decade-long gas import strategy amidst rising energy demand.

Dispute Resolution – We serve as independent economic experts in complex disputes, advising tribunals on energy market issues and damage quantification. Examples include:

  • Evaluating lost profits from a halted hydropower project in Southern Europe in a dispute between a power company and the government;
  • Analyzing the economic consequences of a disputed maritime border between two African nations, focusing on offshore oil and gas production.

Regulatory Affairs – We provide guidance to energy ministries, regulators, and companies on the design and implications of regulatory frameworks for electricity, gas, carbon, and fuel markets. Examples include:

  • Crafting a comprehensive, incentive-based regulatory framework for the electricity sector over the next 12 years in a developing nation seeking to liberalize its energy market;
  • Assessing the quantitative effects of proposed reforms to the EU's carbon market on emissions, pricing, and future investments in power generation.

Transactions – We assist investors and contracting parties with energy asset transactions and long-term supply agreements. Examples include:

  • Conducting commercial due diligence for a French smart meter company on behalf of a potential international buyer;
  • Negotiating a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement for a new 400 MW power plant for an African country's Energy Ministry.

The intern will be based at FTI Consulting's central office in Paris, with occasional travel within Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, if feasible. You will join a team of approximately 45 specialists in the energy sector across EMEA. The intern will work within focused teams, guided by senior professionals who will help shape analyses and impart their expertise to enhance your industry knowledge and analytical capabilities.

Qualifications

The intern is expected to manage multiple strategic, economic, or regulatory projects simultaneously, demonstrating increasing autonomy in their work.

To deliver effective analyses, candidates should exhibit a strong interest in the energy sector, evidenced by their academic background and/or prior internship experience, ideally related to strategic, economic, and regulatory matters in the energy field (electricity, natural gas, oil, coal, renewables, etc.).

Successful candidates should possess:

  • A solid quantitative background for conducting detailed economic analyses. Knowledge of financial analysis, while not mandatory, will be viewed favorably.
  • A high level of diligence in executing work, with a keen attention to detail.
  • The ability to adapt quickly to diverse assignments and various client configurations.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, enabling effective presentation of work to decision-makers.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in additional languages will be positively regarded.
