Research Mission
The power consumption of supercomputers is a major concern, with Frontier, the fastest supercomputer in the world, consuming around 20 MW. Reducing the power consumption of HPC applications is essential.
The first step towards reducing power consumption is monitoring energy consumption. Servers contain wattmeters that measure power consumption of CPU, memory, GPU, etc. However, these measurements are coarse-grained, with typical measurement periods of dozens of milliseconds. Analyzing power consumption at the microsecond scale is challenging.
As part of the PEPR NumPex, we investigate ways to reduce energy consumption of parallel applications running on supercomputers.
Main Activities
The goal of this PhD is to investigate fine-grain energy measurement in StarPU, a task-based runtime system that executes microsecond-scale tasks on CPUs and GPUs.
The proposed approach is to measure energy consumption of a server at coarse-grain (typically, one sample every 20 ms), and log which tasks were executed during this period. By repeating this many times, it should be possible to solve a linear system that models the energy consumption of microsecond-scale tasks.
