Lead Applied Researcher in Generative AI

The AI Applied Research division is pioneering the use of advanced generative AI technologies to develop significant product functionalities within the Datadog application. Our focus is on research, optimization, training, and the effective deployment of large language models (LLMs) and other foundational models to enhance innovative features across the Datadog platform. As a key applied researcher, you will engage in transformative research with direct implications for product development, pushing the limits of what can be achieved with Foundation Models and AI Agents.
Responsibilities:
- Engage in innovative research in Generative AI and Machine Learning, emphasizing the conversion of groundbreaking concepts into practical, high-impact product functionalities.
- Contribute to and utilize extensive distributed fine-tuning and training infrastructures for state-of-the-art models.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to incorporate advanced AI capabilities into the Datadog product ecosystem.
- Lead and contribute to research publications, showcasing findings at leading conferences in the field.
- Actively participate in our journal club, keeping up-to-date with the latest advancements in LLM and Generative AI research.
- Mentor junior researchers and engineers, promoting a culture of innovation and scientific excellence.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related discipline, with a strong emphasis on deep learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing (or equivalent experience).
- Extensive experience in designing and implementing deep learning models, particularly in the NLP sector.
- Proficiency in distributed training frameworks (e.g., DeepSpeed, Megatron-LM) and ML development libraries such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
- A proven ability to connect cutting-edge research with practical product applications.
- A passion for advancing AI while maintaining a strong focus on real-world impact.
- Familiarity with efficient training methods for large foundational models and model compression techniques.
- The capability to articulate complex models and concepts to non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A strong record of impactful research with publications in top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML).
- Hands-on experience with GPU programming and optimization, including CUDA.
- Experience in developing production data pipelines and applications.
