Context and Objectives

The increasing demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications deployed at the edge, rather than solely in the cloud, presents both opportunities and challenges. This shift aims to address concerns related to data privacy, bandwidth limitations, energy consumption, and latency requirements, particularly crucial for real-time applications like autonomous driving, medical diagnosis, smart grids, and predictive maintenance.

To support these demanding AI workloads, there is a surge in the development of specialized Artificial Intelligence Hardware (AI-HW) architectures. These architectures must efficiently handle data movement, computation speed, and substantial memory resources to unlock AI's full potential. Furthermore, explainable AI (XAI), which aims to make AI decisions transparent and understandable, is gaining importance.

Your Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to contribute to research on trustworthy AI hardware architectures. Your work will focus on developing fault-tolerant AI-HW designs that maintain energy efficiency while ensuring reliable and explainable AI operations at the edge.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement fault-tolerant AI hardware architectures using VHDL/Verilog or similar languages.
  • Explore High Level Synthesis (HLS) techniques for efficient implementation of AI algorithms on hardware.
  • Develop and evaluate novel techniques for integrating XAI mechanisms into AI hardware designs.
  • Collaborate with researchers in computer architecture, machine learning, and embedded systems.
  • Contribute to publications in top-tier conferences and journals.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of computer architectures and embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Basic knowledge of hardware design languages like VHDL/Verilog.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++ and Python.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
